For many years after my return from Vietnam, I searched for a way and a means to try and restore my peace and my sanity. Something that could help me make sense of what I had just experienced. I went down many paths, self destruction and denial being the longest running. I made attempts at finding answers through many means, none of them were right and I knew it in my heart. i struggled with depression, self-medication and a feeling that something needed to be right in my soul, i thought that i had lost a piece of myself. One day I entered a public library not knowing what I was really looking for, no real purpose in mind. As I walked the aisles my eyes locked on a book with concentric blue circles. I can only say that I was drawn to it, I knew instinctively there was something important about it. I opened it randomly and settled on a paragraph from a paper and began to read. Immediately and without a doubt I knew I was reading truth. Its hard to describe the feeling that went thru me, It was like slowly dying from thirst and suddenly being saved by a clear cool spring. I read no more than that first paragraph and immediately went to the counter and checked it out. When I arrived home, I opened it and began to read, what I found was so profound and so intense I realized there was no way I could ever complete this book in the normal 2 week check out time.. I then went to the contact information, called the foundation and ordered my own copy. I believed I needed to start at the beginning which I did and read every written word. I have fairly rapid reading skills yet I could not read more than a few paragraphs at a time without falling asleep totally exhausted by the effort. It took me one year to finish the book reading it nearly every day. Almost all of what I read seemed nearly incomprehensible to me at the time but I knew instinctively that it was truth. By the time I had finished it I realized I had read the most profound book of my life ... and yet I felt as if I had hardly absorbed it at best. I immediately went back to the beginning and began reading it all over again, the second time it took approximately 6 months to complete, I began to understand more and more as time and pages went by. That was many years ago now and I read a paper or a portion of one from the website every day. The reading of the Urantia Book is a life journey, to become a part of your everyday existence. I think of portions of it at all hours of the day, often times as I wake each morning. To say it changed my life would be an understatement. Some of you will find it to be the same.

This book took me over two years to read. The 1st thousand pages required a lot of concentration in order to understand the complexity of the content of God and the universe. I read many books in the meantime. I would read a Paper (chapter), or part of one, and have something else to turn to (The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See, La mano de Fatima, La Catedral del mar, Dime quien soy, The Physician, among others). All in all, the entire book was a fascinating learning experience, a journey of discovering so much that I had never imagined the possibility of existing. It has made everything that I did know about history and religion so much clearer, and it explained things that never made sense to me. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has read it and I wish one of my friends or colleagues would so that I could discuss it with someone. It was the learning experience of a lifetime, and has profoundly changed me. I will always be grateful to the person who recommended it to me, one of my students who died last year at the age of 25, who I know is on his journey to perfect himself, even as God is perfect.

This Book is the most profound compilation of wisdom and truth that one could ever read. It brings together truth from all across the world and it's major religions throughout our worlds entire history. Its basically an encyclopedia for truth and spiritual wisdom. But even then it's so much more. You could read and re-read it for an entire life and still be only at the beginning of what it offers. What it offers is living truth. The entire book is about universe reality (love) and how we can grow and become empowered in and through it. It is a journey into the endless river of truth, beauty and goodness. A journey that once begun, words begin to fail for descriptive purposes of just what this book really is, as it is so much more than just a book. It answers pretty much any and every question one could ever think of. If questions such as, who are we? how old is the world? why are we here? where are we going after this life? who were Adam and Eve really? did we evolve from animals? whats the purpose/meaning/value of life? ever crossed your mind then this book should be on your must read list. If you believe in Jesus and wanted to discover more about Him, His loving and merciful nature and wonderful plans for you, this book is definitely for you. Even if you don't but are spiritual and or seeking truth, you wont find a more enlightening manuscript anywhere. It supports no particular religion but shows us how to find and draw out the truth, beauty and goodness within them all and encourages each of us to develop a personal relationship (religion) with the indwelling spirit fragment of God living and loving within each and every one of us. It's nickname is the "Truth Book" and for very good reason. The tough part for many is the faith it takes to believe it really is a "Revelation" written by the Angels above us. I have read it and am wholeheartedly convinced it was. It either was or wasn't but if there is supposedly a book on earth written by angels wouldn't you want to read it for yourself and be the judge? Trust me there is no way a human being could write like this and you will feel that inside of you after reading just one page if not one paragraph?! Over one million words and not a single contradiction or inconsistency. It doesn't exclude -it includes, all of us, as we are all children of the same God-Father-Creator and we may call Him whatever we wish, He loves us all and has never revealed Himself by name only nature. If you are on a spiritual journey and wish to discover more of the true and loving nature of God, I encourage you with all my heart take the chance and the time and you will be forever grateful.....May God bless you in all your strivings!

This is an excellent reference. My understanding is that the Haynes military books are quite variable in quality; this is one of the best ones. The authors are former tankers on the Abrams with at least one being in Desert Storm. There are details on the history of the M1 program, the current situation and future possibilities. Marine tanks and tankers are given prominent treatment although foreign operators are given some but much less attention. As of mid 2017 the program information and future speculation are quite current, matching what I read on professional defense industry news sites. The photos are excellent throughout and really illustrate the operation of the tank from a tanker point of view. The captions the photos are extensive. The photos serve to complement the text and this book is not just a photo reference for modelers, like the Abrams books by Sabot. I particularly enjoyed the photos of damaged and destroyed Abrams and enemy vehicles. There are some topics not covered at all. The discussion of military organization pretty much ends with the tank platoon and even the discussion of platoons is minimal. This books lacks the key piece of information that as of the book's publication all Abrams in the US Army belong to 15 (including the National Guard) armored brigade combat teams and that within the ABCT Abrams are mostly grouped within three combined arms battalions, with one or two tank companies within each battalion. There is nothing in the book on who maintains the tanks within an ABCT combined arms battalion. As of 2016 the recon battalion/regiment also has an Abrams company. There is nothing on Marine tank organization or the role of the four or so tanks within a MEU.I know the Abrams has access to some obscure forms of ammunition that are not mentioned in the book, which focuses only on sabot and HEAT rounds.Another missing topic is any discussion of tank tactics. When should tanks be supported by infantry and when should they operate on their own? There is very brief information on competing NATO tanks. One can combine several passages from different parts of the book to learn the bottom line that the Abrams probably has the best armor and ammunition among tanks on the planet but has a fuel inefficient gas turbine engine, limiting the range of the tank. There is nothing on whether the Abrams can easily defeat Chinese and Russian tanks that are more updated than the tanks used by the Iraqis during Desert Storm. There is nothing on the quality levels of the electronic and mechanical systems installed on the tank.

The M1 Abrams really needs no introduction, and considering how famous and iconic it is, I'm surprised it took Haynes this long to publish a "workshop manual" on it. The result is fairly decent, although not exactly mindblowing. This book follows the standard Haynes format. The first chapter focuses on the evolution of Main Battle Tank design in the US in the 60s and 70s, the initial trials of the M1, and each of the main variants produced since 1980. The next chapter describes the military aspects of the M1 - the roles of the crew and their stations, the main and secondary guns, ammunition types and stowage, and fire control. Chapter three covers survivability aspects, such as armor, blast resistance, IFF systems, and camouflage. Chapter four looks at mobility systems, including the engine, transmission, and suspension, while chapter five describes the tank's wartime service and includes the bulk of the firsthand accounts. The final chapter includes brief descriptions of several specialized variants, including bridge-layers and assault engineer vehicles.Rating this book was a bit tricky for me. Like other good Haynes titles, it has a large number of excellent photographs, some interesting technical and operational insights, and a healthy dose of firsthand accounts. The sections dedicated to the evolution of the tank's design, the exploded views of the gas turbine, and the numerous photographs of the interior and of the complex logistics of strategic mobility were particularly enlightening. For a Tank Museum collaboration, the technical descriptions tend to be rather sketchy, with the suspension and laser rangefinder only getting a couple paragraphs each. The M1 is still in service with the armies of seven nations, and elements such as the armor and fire control system are still highly classified, so this might be a case of Haynes jumping the gun. This isn't the best Haynes tank manual, nor is the worst. Although the Abrams isn't exactly obscure, this book still contains a good amount of interesting material. It also contains a truly odd "Easter egg" on page 124 which I'm amazed slipped by the editorial team at Haynes. There's a candid picture of co-author Gregory Walton, out of uniform, standing beside his tank somewhere in the Saudi Arabian desert prior to Desert Storm. And by out of uniform, I mean COMPLETELY out of uniform. Although the picture was taken a good 50 feet away, and you can't really make much out, it's obvious where Mr. Walton wasn't shaving - if you know what I mean. So, yeah. Although this isn't the best book Haynes has ever published, it's certainly the first with full frontal nudity.

Excellently detail manual for the US Army is main battle tank. I love the detail and every section plus the pictures ad a great deal to the volume enjoyment the only thing I didn’t like with how short it is

Very good detail drawings and pictures for the scale modeller.

Great book with lots of good info . Great books in this series.

My son loved this book

Great book.

Appears to be a very solid reference book for those interested in this vehicle.

It's finally here! If you're new to Vulkan, this is probably the best place to start. When I started with Vulkan a couple of months ago, this book wasn't out, so I read the spec and searched the web. This book would have helped me get to the same place, faster and with less pain. From my perspective, it has two main shortcomings, The index feels very sparse; most of it consists of a listing of Vulkan API functions, with only a single page of topics that don't start with "Vk".Secondly, I don't feel like my knowledge has been deepened by reading it. There are several topics that I managed to mostly learn before I received this book. When I consulted it to try fill gaps in my understanding, I was unsuccessful. For example, I was unable to find any discussion about "disturbing previously bound descriptor sets".The book has an associated GitHub repository, which currently has no code. I may have to revise my rating after code is published there.Overall, the book is well-written and approachable. I think that the second edition will probably be excellent: Vulkan is very new, and there hasn't been much time for Khronos to hear community feedback, to understand the topics that people will find difficult when mastering Vulkan. I'll probably buy it, despite already owning the first. For now, this is probably the best starting point for someone who is serious about learning Vulkan.

In my opinion this book is just an organized collection of API calls; something like the "OpenGL reference manual". There is almost no code inside and no explanation on how you can use all those APIs to create something with any sense. For example you can find what a buffer is and how to create one, but there is no mention on how you can create and fill one that is resident on the device (GPU) memory.Even if I am an expert on raster graphics I had a very hard time trying to figure out how to build an engine out of those APIs. I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone without a deep understanding of computer graphics and next generation graphics libraries. If you already master DirectX 12 or had a chance to play with AMD's Mantle, then maybe this book can be helpful.

The book itself is ok. If you go through the official vulkan documentation and do some random online tutorials you'd probably learn just as much. I'd give it two stars, but currently the code for the book is not available yet.Update: After several months, still no code.Update 2: 5 months later... still no code.I bought this book because it was one of the first resources out, but now there are much better resources available. I would skip this an dlook elsewhere.

This book is just a copy of Vulkan API official online reference with few comments. I am disappointed.

This book continues the same bad teaching method as the OpenGL books of the past. It has most of the information, but frequently skips over vital details or fails to explain how something needs to be done and why. It assumes the reader has not just in-depth expertise in graphics programming, which is a reasonable assumption, but also expertise in Vulkan programming, which is obviously a silly assumption in a Vulkan Programming Guide. They need Frank Luna to write their learning materials. He's infinitely better.

The first and the last chapters are probably the best, but overall the book is as fun to read as a collection of manpages would be. It is not structured around practical scenarios or use cases, but instead describes the Vulkan API part by part. You can still get a decent understanding of the API from it, especially if you have a prior experience with graphics, but I advise fast-forwarding the middle part and returning back to particular functions later, when you have a practical problem and need to look up nuances.

I pre ordered this book and waited for it. Once I received it was nothing but disappointment. This book is fundamentally snapshot of spec with very very little explanations on simple concepts only. There are much more detailed online tutorials for free.

I don't envy the author as trying to write and easy guide to Vulkan is a challenge. I started reading this but found the amount of code necessary to learn do so the simplest things a bit hard to keep track of.I found this is better as a reference - for learning there are several online tutorials that I found that allowed you to progress faster.
