A Year in Baghdad, by Joan Baez

From Publishers Weekly

Parents of the famous singer and pacifist tell of their year-long sojourn in Iraq in 1951 and how it helped to crystallize their family's values. A 10-year-old Joan drew the slight illustrations that decorate each of the short journal-like entries, where the warm, informal voices of the parents alternate in a medley of familial harmony. Albert Baez concentrates on describing his work as a physics professor and his wife on her efforts to create domestic comfort in their crude Baghdad house. We're steeped in details of trip preparations, private matters and itinerary that are the usual stuff of family vacations. Travails include their anxiety over attaining a functional bathroom, their clash with villagers who took offense at their photographing an historic site and their rainy-day outing to a movie house. One of the Baez family's ostensible motives is to register a vote for cultural diplomacy. The book, however, most resembles a testament to their beliefs, and they speak of their affiliation with the Religious Society of Friends. But, unfortunately, interest in their homey stories wanes too soon despite their good will, and readers, except those curious about the singer's upbringing, will be convinced that the treasure of these memoirs remains personal to the Baez family. From Library Journal

In 1951, Al and Joan Baez took their three young daughters to Baghdad for a year, where Al was on a Unesco mission to teach physics. Their experiences as a young and idealistic family in a strange, inefficient, and uncomfortable land make up this book. Alternate chapters by the two authors relate the difficulties in getting settled, the professional challenges, the many friends and kindnesses, the illnesses, and more. They conclude that the year was stressful for all, but valuable. The style is personal and prosaic, and the results are pleasant but not memorable. The only thing noteworthy about the book is that the illustrations were done by their daughter, the famed folk singer. Elizabeth R. A surprisingly fine read. The drawings by Joan Baez are very well done and contribute to the overall fine feel of a lovely travelogue of a multi-talented American family in a very unusual land.

Despite the rather luke-warm opinions of the "experts" as shown, I wanted to offer a more positive review. To me, a good travel book is not defined by the number of its adventures but by the quiet observation, honesty and empathy of the author(s). And this book is loaded with those fine qualities. It is written by the parents of the famous Joan Baez, Albert and Joan Baez. But instead of being written as a pure collaboration, the chapters instead flip back and forth between their two voices, and perspectives. As Albert struggled to launch his chemistry lab at a Baghdad University, Joan the mother tried to bring a domestic normalcy into the home, mostly for the sake of the three young children. The children for their part suffered some trials, including hepatitis for Joan the daughter, and some bad days at school with the mean old nun.But probably the most affecting pieces are the ones where the authors lovingly describe the people and the sights around them. I was moved by Albert's description of the old city, as observed from his roof, while he mused about the town of Bethlehem at Christmastime. And Joan's description of the local woman bearing endless gifts of spinach, was also touching in its own way. There's lots of quoted expressions in the book that are not soon forgotten, such as "Izzent it?", and "Me Chris" translated: "I'm Christian". It was clear that the language barrier created a huge obstacle in reaching out to the locals, and as a consequence the book has a feeling of a hole in it, like a sizeable pothole in the road. But all in all it was good reading, and quite well written, impressively so for "non-writers". I only saw one mention of Quakerism in the book, so don't believe that it's filled with propaganda, because it's not. The family does seem quite astonishingly liberal, considering the time, and the respect that the parents give to the ideas and opinions of their daughters is truly admirable. In the afterward, there is a bit of an explanation as to why the book was written the way it was, because apparently the authors weren't living together at the time. You'll have to read the book to find out why.Oh, and not to forget, the drawings were quite charming as well. It's really a shame that the book isn't in print anymore, I was a bit surprised at that. So check it out at your local library, and perhaps you'll be charmed too!

I read way too much, sadly to the point it is impacting my life. I am getting too little sleep and after many months of feeling neglected my husband is starting to voice complaints at the lack of attention. Therefore to keep my 27 plus years of marriage a good one I am trying to reduce the amount that I read. Therefore in effort to slow down the amount that I am reading, I am only allowing myself to read paperback books as opposed to the electronic versions during the work week. Even though I prefer contemporary romances I find that there are more paperback historical romance books that fit my personal criteria that then any other type. Why am I tell you all of this? Really it is to give a disclaimer. My knowledge about history is lacking and therefore when I review historical romance books I am not going to comment on how historically accurate the book is. I just will not nor would someone want me too.For the most part I enjoyed reading this story that is a mix of romance, drama and mystery. While he sometimes acts like a jerk I liked that the Grant is a jealous and possessive alpha hero who falls hard and fast for the heroine. While I occasionally found the heroine annoying I didn't dislike her. While they come later in the story there are hot sexy times. This is a forced seduction story and so if that bothers you then I suggest skipping this story. It was not a mystery to me as to why the heroine had a personality transplant and probably is not to the majority of the readers either. The whodunit is not known but much later in the book when the readers are given enough information

Normally I love books by this author but this one misses the mark by a mile for me. The characters’ physical descriptions seem more appropriate for an adult molesting a child rather than describing two adults. The hero is described as an I-love-you-but-I-hate-you kind of guy, that is, a person who in real life would become controlling and physically abusive. Nor are his actions to the contrary. He is controlling and possessive and won’t accept no or any constraints placed on his ability to act. The book essentially romanticizes an abusive relationship. While the abuse meted out is diverted to others, and the sexual demands override his partner’s noes to deliver orgasms, it is still abuse described as desired romance. This is not for me. And it is not helped by the virgin-whore dichotomy throughout. Disgusting.

The Bow Street Runner series is quite excellent and this is the first book in series. You could skip it quite easily, but it does give you a nice sense of the universe the novels are set in before you move on to the other two much better books in this series.I won't go into the plot - others have that covered quite well. I'll admit the book is entertaining and kept me flipping through the pages, but my problems with this book stem from characters I don't quite find likeable. Sir Grant is kind of a jerk and it's obvious from the beginning. He never really makes enough personal changes for me in the book to become the kind of hero I like reading about. As with any book where the heroine has amnesia for almost the entire novel, there's not exactly a ton of personality there to find likeable int he first place!I also feel like the pacing of this book is a bit off - the ending drags on for pages and left me feeling fairly unsatisfied.Overall, it's not a bad book necessarily, but I suppose I hold it to a higher standard since I find Lisa Kleypas to be one of the best romance authors out there. If you're like me and refuse to let no stone go unturned when you find an author you like, go ahead and give this one a shot. If you're wanting to read the other Bow Street Runner novels and find yourself struggling to get into this book - just skip it and move on. The other two books are great!

NOT her best work. "hero" is an unlikeable ~alpha~ who, while supposedly an accomplished detective, reacts emotionally to any and all situations instead of analyzing. he sulks and broods his way through the book before he is suddenly overwhelmed by his love for the heroine. the heroine, meanwhile, is so overwhelmed by the amnesia and attempts on her life she has barely any opportunity to demonstrate a personality. I do think she had one, but the book just didn't have the scope necessary. We learn the most about her personality -- fears, hopes, capabilities under stress -- in the very last quarter. Also, this seems to be very haphazardly edited. There are multiple instances of the word "premise" being used instead of "chemise" in a single scene. A copy editor should have caught that.

I followed this series years ago and this was the one title in the series that I didn't get to read. I'm ecstatic that I got to read it and wasn't disappointed in the storyline. The novel got off to a gripping and suspenseful start with a body washing up on the banks of the river. What the hero, a Bow Street runner, modern day cop, thought was a corpse turned out to be his nemesis, a well-known London courtesan whom he disdains. Or is she really a courtesan? As the book unfolds and the heroine baffles the hero with her uncharacteristic behavior and personality, like the hero, I also began to doubt her true identity. The heat between them is immediate and unquenchable from the get-go, even though he's fighting his passion for her. The intimacy is all I could hope for in a romance. The mystery and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and the conclusion left me wishing the book had never ended. An astounding read that I recommend to romance lovers everywhere.

I have collected many lists of astronomy targets. This is the best list for people that want to take pictures. With a fair section of the book telling you the basics of how to take pictures (equipment, S/W, techniques). However, you will want to read additional books to tell you more details on equipment, methods, and post processing). The targets are objects that are big enough and bright enough to be seen with an average amateur telescope without needing many hours of exposure, and are also pretty to look at, and in the Northern hemisphere. (The book isn't as useful if you live in New Zealand or Australia).I really like the order in which the objects are listed, by the month/day they will be in the sky. So if want to know what you can image this month, it is very easy to find your targets and plan your session. Each target has a picture, and a good description.I'm pleased with this book, and recommend it to anyone starting off in astro photography in the Northern hemisphere.

There are a lot of books about astrophotography, and a lot more books with collections of objects to view through a telescope. But this book is one of the rare books that concentrates on objects from the perspective of an astrophotographer. Most astrophotographers stick to targets from the classic object lists by Charles Messier and William Herschel. But photography is a different discipline than observation. So the classic lists include non-photogenic objects and they miss some hard-to-view objects that are great for an imager.Ruben Kier delivers each target with three essential, but succinct, pieces: 1) the background information about the object, 2) advice on the techniques for image capture, and 3) tips for image processing. Each target treatment includes one or more photos by the author along with his imaging details. The images are excellent without being extravagant or intimidating. His processing touch is productive but gentle and the results look very real. The photo reproduction in the book is very well done by the printer so you can appreciate the quality of the original. These aren't just targets in the sky: Ruben's images are targets for aspiring imagers to match. The main section of the book holds the target information. The slimmer Section 2 includes include three short chapters on astrophotography equipment, imaging techniques and the complex process of image post-processing. This section is presented as a gateway to further investigation and isn't a replacement for dedicated books on these three subjects. The book is a valuable tool for planning and processing your images. But it's not a "field book". The perfect binding and non-laminated pages aren't built for dew-y outdoor use. However, the octavo size is very portable for imaging roadtrips. This is a "don't leave home without it" book. The book is organized for the convenience of the reader: The imaging targets are presented by the date they appear on the meridian at 9pm local standard time. By then it's dark and the scope has (hopefully) cooled to ambient temperature.Published in 2009, the book's hardware and software references are limited by that date. For example, the Section 2 discussion on focusing techniques includes basic focusing masks, but not the more recent slew of diffraction focusing tools (eg, Bahtinov). Hardware and software enumerations have unavoidably short shelf life. But luckily for imagers, the astronomy targets in the book have indefinite "use by" dates.A final observation: The promised "100 targets" actually includes 109 objects by my count. That number is the number of objects in the Messier list (and the Caldwell list and the O'Meara list). Coincidence? If you are a beginning or intermediate imager, this is a book you should have. In its narrative and photos, it's the answer to a lot of your questions. I expect many productive years from the book.

I shoot with a DSLR camera and not a CCD camera. This book is designed for use with a monochrome CCD, therefore it was of limited use to me. That's not necessarily bad. The book is so good, that even limited use rates a five stars from me. It helps me to know the best targets that are out at any given time and how to best frame them. I consult the book nearly every week. I am glad that I purchased it. If you shoot either a CCD or DSLR camera you know the difference and what I am talking about. If you think the price of the book is worth the price of a guide book that shows you what is up and how to frame it, then purchase the book. If you think the book is going to give you tips on imaging and processing with your DSLR, then don't purchase the book. If you shoot a CCD, there is no question. Get the book.

Out of several hundred texts in my astronomy library, Kier's work is among the top ten titles. The book is dog-eared and loaded with sticky notes from continued use in the field. The work is very well organized and the author's comments and suggestions offered in a compact and insightful manner based on hundreds of hours devoted to imaging the objects presented. This book should be a mainstay for the beginning imager and the most experienced astrophotographers alike. Particularly appreciated are the recommendations for both RGB and single-shot color techniques. Kier anticipated the growth and increasing sophistication of single-shot color sensors even though the guide was written in 2009. Don't let the publication date deter you from purchasing this book--it remains relevant, although it would be great to see what the author could come up with in a second edition. More than anything, Kier's how-to guide is a cookbook for imagers, with every 2-3 pages providing the recipes needed to produce solid results. Great concept, great book.

Back in the 1960's I wanted so badly to photograph the beautiful things I was seeing in my home made, hand ground 6 inch telescope. I rushed the exposed film to the drug store and a week later when they came back I was so disappointed. It never got much better. When I read this book my interest was renewed. Today the cameras and equipment have been improved so much that it is possible and a lot easier to get the wonderful pictures I have always wanted. I followed this author's methods, dusted off my old telescope and spend a lot of time in the dark. I am very happy, but my wife wants me to come back inside.
