Princes, by Sonya Hartnett

Amazon.com Review

In a dazzling display of virtuosity, Australian writer Sonya Hartnett carries the idea of a double self to the extreme of madness in a gothic tale of twin brothers. Sardonic and mercurial Indigo was born "first and ferocious," and compliant but stubborn Ravel is "second and bewildered." The two relate to no one in the world but each other, now that their parents have disappeared under mysterious circumstances known only to Indigo. Secluded in a rambling mansion set in tangled gardens, watched by multitudes of rats inhabiting the decaying walls, they spend their days reading eccentric and gruesome stories to each other--stories that also serve as oblique comments on their own narrative. Indigo reacts with outrage when Ravel has a brief romance, interpreting his brother's restlessness as a desire for separation. Ravel falls ill and is confined to his room, where he soon realizes that the green peppermint milk his brother brings him is laced with rat poison. His suspenseful escape turns the double identity back on itself in a deliciously intricate mind game. Hartnett, who earned high praise for her sophisticated and terrifying novel Sleeping Dogs, follows that debut with this stunning, stylistic tour de force, which can be read both as a horror story and an allegory for the terrors of the shadow self. (Ages 14 and older) --Patty Campbell

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 UpAIndigo and Ravel are 21-year-old identical twins and have always been together. They live in a rundown mansion, and one has made a prisoner of the other. They revel in gruesome, horrific stories. When they begin to play mind games with one another, both descend into a world of insanity, twisted identity, and bizarre behavior. The brothers are so identical that as the story progresses, each mistakes himself for the other, leaving readers as confused as the young men. One-to-three page vignettes on a variety of topics that bear little relation to the plot add to the confusion. These side stories (not to be confused with subplots) are plopped into the story line and cause major problems with sequencing of events. Even if readers figure out what the plot and theme are all about, they probably won't care. The characters are so peculiar and weird as to be unbelievable. One of them kills their parents and begins to poison the other. It's all so horrific that there is little desire to understand, empathize, or care about either character. Hartnett's writing lacks clarity and consistency. Even the dark mood and tone lose their appeal because of the disjointed story line. Anne Rice, at her weirdest, is much better. In the end, it's unlikely that anyone will care about these "princes."AMolly S. Kinney, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Sonya Hartnett has really struck the psychological nail on the head in this dark and twisted narrative. Twins Ravel and Indigo live in a haunted mansion overrun by rats, with only each other as company. Hartnett develops the characters with such precision, that it is undoubtedly a book that can't be put down. I hung on every word from the shocking start to the shocking end. It is an educated look at the psychology of isolation, the extremities of love, and the power one can hold over another. Don't be put off, however, in thinking that this book is a hard read. Hartnett's ability to flow with her words makes it understandable, but intriguing and exciting at the same time. For those who like a bit of the macabre, it is definitely a 'different' and unique story, which I loved and will always be one of my favourites of all times.

I first read this book when I was in ninth grade and have longed to own it ever since. The story completely drew me in to the point that it influenced my own writings. The story of twin brothers, fully dependent on one another to the point of insanity. I was flipping through the pages like mad, eager to get to the conclusion, yet hesitant of the story being over. I highly recommend this book. You can trust me. I've spent years hunting it down.

The First Fossil Hunters: Paleontology in Greek and Roman Times., by Adrienne Mayor

Amazon.com Review

Since fossils have presumably existed for millions of years, why don't we see much paleontological thought from ancient writers? Classics scholar Adrienne Mayor suggests that we can, in fact, learn much about the Greek and Roman attitudes toward fossils if we turn to a surprising source of data and theory: their myths. In The First Fossil Hunters, she explores likely connections between the rich fossil beds around the Mediterranean and tales of griffins and giants originating in the classical world. Striking similarities exist between the Protoceratops skeletons of the Gobi Desert and the legends of the gold-hoarding griffin told by nomadic people of the region, and the fossilized remains of giant Miocene mammals could be taken for the heroes and monsters of earlier times. Mayor makes her case well, but, as with all interpretive science, the arguments are inconclusive. Still, her novel reading of ancient myth--and her critique of the modern scientific mythology that seeks to explain the lack of classical paleontological thinking--is compelling and thought-provoking. The final chapter of The First Fossil Hunters is an engrossing and occasionally quite funny look at "Paleontological Fictions" dating back several thousand years; the false tritons and centaurs give P.T. Barnum and his successors a much longer genealogy than previously thought. Whether or not you accept Mayor's analysis of Greek and Roman thinking, The First Fossil Hunters should open your eyes to new possibilities about our distant past. --Rob Lightner

From Scientific American

The history of paleontology, as it is usually seen, starts with the work of French naturalist Georges Cuvier some 200 years ago. Mayor, a classical folklorist, moves the date back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. "The ancients collected, measured, displayed, and pondered the bones of extinct beasts," she writes, "and they recorded their discoveries and imaginative interpretations of the fossil remains in numerous writings that survive today." Among the beasts whose bones they pondered were giant giraffes, mammoths and mastodons. Mayor also proposes that the griffin of classical folklore, described in the legends as having the body of a lion and the beak of an eagle, "was based on illiterate nomads' observations of dinosaur skeletons in the deserts of Central Asia." And she tells of purely imaginary creatures of the classical period, such as the triton and the centaur. But her focus is on what the ancients made of the bones of real animals. Advances in classical studies and paleontology, she says, "now make it possible to restore the ancient fossil investigations to their rightful place in the history of science." There was a TV documentary based on this book, which I found fascinating. I looked for the book, a textbook admittedly, and was happy to find it here. The author documents ancient references to fossils and includes extensive notes and appendices. These references are especially convincing in support of her ideas. The fun part is that the ancients clearly recognized the bones as having come from a previous time and viewed them as possibly the bones of giants and heroes, quickly rearranging an elephant's bones into the remains of a giant man (with one eye). Voila! a cyclops. Recommended.

This book presents the idea that ancients were well aware of fossils, and discusses their interpretations of them. It shows how different members of society tried to interpret them in different ways (most interpreted them as being signs of giants and monsters, but some took this to show divine origins, and others took it to be part of natural history). The ideas are very interesting, and the history of the importance of different fossilized bones in different cities is quite exciting. My only complaint is that the books seems to be quite repetitive. Not only are the points that the author is trying to make repetitive, but she even repeats some of the stories she tells several times. A good editor could have trimmed out 1/3 of the book. All in all, a good book. Interesting, thorough, and decently referenced. For anyone interested in classics or paleontology, this is a good buy.

Again anything by Adrienne Mayor...Wonderful interpretations of fossils found by ancient Greeks, et al. and how they used them as bases for their mythology.

this book absolutely changed my ideas of ancient myths and legends, merging myths and legends with a basis in reality, ie, fossils

At first very excited. Too much repetition and found some appelations peculiar. Would like to have seen some classics scholars consulted. And not one American paleontologist cited - unless I just mised it. Not much talk about migration theories. the ancient Greeks understood even more than she gives them credit for - check out myths as well as legends - there's a reason for myth.

.I enjoyed Mayor's theorizing and speculation in "First Fossil Hunters." Examining ancient myths as the way in which ancient peoples gave context to the enormous prehistoric bones and skeletons they encountered is a fascinating concept. The chapters on griffins and on elephants are quite good. These are thought-provoking essays which make a lot of sense. Appendix Two is interesting and useful, with many quotes from ancient historians and story tellers referencing giants and mythological beasts. I hope to read many of the books listed in the "works cited" section of this volume.Like Mayor's book on Native American fossils and legends, this book would benefit from more careful editing. Not too sure why a distinguished press like Princeton University Press would do such a bargain basement job of layout and design, but so be it."The First Fossil Hunters" is worth reading.Kim BurdickStanton, Delaware

Today, when a spectacular fossil is unearthed, it ends up in a museum. Our ancestors must have found stone bones, too, but they didn't have museums. So they put them in temples. And spun yarns about them. It should not have been surprising that, once someone thought to ransack the ancient world for evidence, so much of it remains. We have already seen, in other fields, how much can be reconstructed from even the scraps of inscriptions that have been accumulated so assiduously by, for the most part, German philologists. And we already knew that the Greeks, above all other premodern people, asked questions about what they found in the world around them.It is a bit of a surprise, if Adrienne Mayor is correct, that the model of the griffin should be dinosaur fossils found as far away as Central Asia. That was a very, very long way from Greece. Less surprising, perhaps, that fake fossils were also in evidence.Probably none of the fossils collected so long ago remains, but Adrienne Mayor finds a few representations of them. The most convincing is a skull painted on a vase. Her treatment is very complete, with an appendix of apparent references to fossils in old texts, such as a passing reference in Cicero to theft of fossils from a temple. There is room for much speculation in this scrappy material, and Mayor makes the most of it.Altogether, 'The First Fossil Hunters' is a clever, entertaining, imaginative and curious book.

I ordered this book to prepare for a GMAT retake. I went from 580 to 640 (Q34 to Q40) in one month of prep (I know I'm not a 700+ genius scorer, so I don't know how useful this is for those super high-level students out there) and I have this book to thank. Mr. Sackmann has a way of explaining the problems without being wordy or confusing - his language made things click, especially in the probablilty and combination/permutation sections. Each section offers an explanantion (including basics, how often the type of problem appears in the test, useful tricks, etc), then a 'drill' section followed by practice word problems and a challenge if appropriate. The layout makes it easy to focus on your weak areas and there are plenty of practice questions to help raise your ability level. The drills are particularly useful if, like me, you sometimes screw up a problem not due to misunderstanding the question or not knowing HOW to solve it, but in the actual solving. I made remarkably fewer math errors after completing every drill. It took me about a week to work through it, averaging 2-3 hours a day. However, I would also recommend the OG as the question styles are a bit different than what the GMAT would ask.The only thing I would change is the spacing of the text. I like working the problems on the page and would have loved a little more scratchwork space. But the content is fantastic and a great way to polish your quant skills!

I am the founder of GMAT Club and top 1000 reviewer on Amazon - I have seen a lot of GMAT books and also reviewed pretty much all of them. This is a single most complete book that includes everything you need to get a solid score on the quant (you should also get the OG 12, and the author recommends it as well). It is also not a book that just came out of nowhere, Total GMAT math has been available as an ebook for about 4 years now and I am glad to see it is finally available in the print format. However, it does assume a greater level of general math knowledge as well as commitment than most GMAT books - that's what you get with a comprehensive bookThe get the most of this book: 1) Read the first intro chapters including the one on "how to use this book" 2) Take each suggestion seriously 3) Make your own notes in a separate notebook 4) Always time yourself with a timer and keep a GMAT error logStrengths:- 300+ GMAT style questions- Good explanations with diagrams- The book is writen as an instruction manual with many insights and tips n the chapters/explnations- Over 500 Exercises (non-gmat style questions)- Covers all topics test on the gmat including probabilyt, statistics, etc without going too far- Each question are gets a section (inequalities, absolute value, work problems, etc)- Includes 100 of 700+ questions- Good strategy suggestions including focusing on concepts rather than solving thousands of questions, writing question information down, and mental math concepts- Good paper and formulas are done wellWeaknesses:- The chapters are structured in a slightly unorthodox pattern. The book starts with algebra, then goes into geometry, then work problems, and then number properties. I felt that moving number properties closer to the beginning of the book would make more sense. I also felt the chapters were a bit choppy (only a few pages long) but that's my preference- Could be intimidating: the text is very tightly packed with just a handful of illustrations. (see my uploaded image for details)- No highlighting or a summary sheet - would be great to have formulas or key concepts highlighted on pages or at the end of the book- Copyright and website address on every page - gets a bit old and distracting- No OG recommendations table - would be helpful to have a list of questions from the OG for additional practice after each chapter- Table of content is not usable (11 pages)Bottom line: This is the ultimate book for math on the GMAT. If you are looking for a 50 on the quant, this is the book to get. However, this may be too much for some who are not seeking to spend 6 weeks on this book. Let not the price scare you - it is on the low side of what other prep companies charge for the entire math book set.***Other thoughts***5 Most Common Mistakes with GMAT preparation1: Rushing to take tests before learning anything - do take a diagnostic test, but stop right there2: Starting with the Official Guide and wasting of official GMAT questions3: Giving GMAT the worst time of the day - studying after a long day at work4: Skipping basics and rushing to advanced topics5: Starting to prepare with poor English proficiencyLet me know any questions about this book - I reply to commentsGood Luck on your GMAT!BB, Founder of GMAT ClubGMAT 750

This is a decent math book, but I don't believe it will help someone who truly needs to relearn all of the math on the GMAT. The explanation of material is extremely brief and would be very difficult to pickup many of the skills unless you had prior knowledge of the subject. What it does do well is briefly highlight all of the different types of math material that you needs to know and provides a type of checklist for someone who just wants to brush up on math and make sure they have all the material covered. For example, if you really don't remember things like factoring, basic algebra, exponent rules, etc this book probably isn't a good starting point. If you do remember these skills, then this book gives you a few practice questions and shows how those skills are applied to GMAT practice problems, which is useful.
