THE COUP AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY answers the question many American Catholics have asked themselves ever since: "What happened to Catholic Higher Education in America?"Late in the 1967 school year, Archbishop Patrick O''Boyle, chancellor of the University, had initiated an action to "not renew" the contract to employ theology professor, Father Charles Curran, due to the young priest's problematic teachings on sexual matters. Fr. Curran, instead of going quietly, protested the "dismissal"--along with many of his confreres in the university's School of Theology. The chancellor and bishops on the board of trustees relied upon the Church and the Magisterium as their authority for their actions; while Curran and the School of Theology appealed to the "total academic freedom" encapsulated in the norms of the American Association of University Professors, which the University had recently subscribed to in order to elevate its standing in American academia. The board attempted to keep the situation low-key until resolved; however, Fr. Curran and the School of Theology staged a university-wide strike of both students and faculty of every Department within Catholic U.--with the exception of the School of Education, led by the courageous dean, Monsignor Eugene A. Kevane.The young, charismatic Fr. Curran became the darling of the media during the boycott. Within a week, due largely to the firestorm created by the media, the Board of Trustees caved. Not only did they re-instate Fr. Curran, they also gave him tenure...an action they would regret when, a little over a year later, Fr. Curran and over 400 theologians signed an open "Statement of Dissent" against Pope Paul IV's encyclical, Humanae Vitae.Now the Board's earlier capitulation to the principles of "Academic Freedom" over fealty to the Magisterium led to dire consequences. I really loved this book. It took me less than 3 days to finish and it was really hard to put down. As a devout Catholic who grew up in the 80's I saw the direct effect of the theologians trying to make themselves the teacher of the faith. This book had my blood boiling, not because I disagreed with it, but simply because I hated how the bishops in charge of the university allowed the sheep to lead the flock. It doesn't make any sense to me that the "Catholic University of America", would in just a few years give in the secularized mentality that is ruining our country today. I pray that our current church leaders stand up for the faith handed down to us by Jesus Christ with no compromise or fear. This book was very well written and informative. If you're interested in how our Catholic universities became secularized then this is the book for you.

Avery accurate account of how moral relativism triumphed and led to the death of a great university. I lived through that period. I relived it when I read this. An excellent book and recommended for people of faith.

John H. Walton (PhD, Hebrew Union College) is professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College and Graduate School. Previously he was professor of Old Testament at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago for twenty years. Some of Walton's books include The Lost World of Adam and Eve, The Lost World of Scripture, The Lost World of Genesis One, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament, The Essential Bible Companion, The NIV Application Commentary: Genesis and The IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament (with Victor Matthews and Mark Chavalas). Walton's ministry experience includes church classes for all age groups, high school Bible studies and adult Sunday school classes, as well as serving as a teacher for "The Bible in 90 Days." It is a piece of the biblical story that has inflamed some, incensed others, embarrassed many, and baffled not a few. What does one do with the violent conquest of Canaan by Israel? John H. Walton, professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College and Graduate School, and J. Harvey Walton, researcher in biblical studies, have assembled suggestions that map out one way to read the conquest narratives in their recently published 288 page paperback “The Lost World of the Israelite Conquest: Covenant, Retribution, and the Fate of the Canaanites”. This compilation is one more installment in the multivolume “Lost World” series spearheaded by John Walton. The present work slowly moves the technical and non-technical reader through twenty-one propositions toward their final conclusion.“The Lost World of the Israelite Conquest” moves, step-by-step, along a line that attempts to tease out what the conquest narratives would have meant “to the people to whom it was originally written” (8). To accomplish this feat, Walton and Walton address the cognitive environment of the original audience and challenge present readers not to impose modern sensitivities and sensibilities to the accounts; “what matters is not what modern Westerners think about the methods, but what ancient Near Easterners would have thought” (11). One overarching claim by the authors is the proposal “that the Bible is given to us not to provide a list of rules for behavior but to reveal God’s plans and purposes to us, which in turn will allow us to participate with him in those plans and purposes” (15-6).To reach their aim, the authors take apart every text that comes to mind, which has normally been translated and read as moral justifications for the conquest stories. Their working assumption, woven throughout, is that when “we see the people in Canaan suffer, therefore, we dare not assume that their suffering must have been earned through evil” (37). From Genesis 15:6 to Leviticus 18-20 and on through 1 and 2 Kings, Walton and Walton tangle with the Hebrew to bring out a different understanding of every passage than it has normally been translated or understood to mean. Since the authors appear to deny a universal moral law that people of Canaan had broken (77), then their conclusion is that there was no retribution for idolatry because “idolatry is not inherently immoral” (80), nor a reprisal for social and sexual immorality. Rather, in the conquests Yahweh is depicted as “carrying out the proper function of a god in the context of the ancient Near East” (78). To validate this last assertion the authors lean heavily on Ancient Near Eastern myths and tales.So if the conquests were not conducted for reasons of immorality, then what was their goal? Here “The Lost World of the Israelite Conquest” pursues the Hebrew word, ḥērem, which is often translated “total destruction”. To my mind, this was the most beneficial portion of the whole volume. According to Messrs. Walton and Walton, ḥērem is about “identity, not ethnicity” (186). In other words, the aim of ḥērem was for removing “the identity of a conquered people” which was “a standard procedure of ancient warfare”. And so Canaanite identity “needs to be removed so that Israel cannot make use of it (191). The objective “is to remove the various Canaanite identities from the use of every individual who remains in the land, by one way or another,” including the command to Saul to wipe out the Amalekites in 1 Samuel 15 (214-29).It is from this perspective that the authors apply the conquests, and especially ḥērem, to Christians. The Old Testament template of ḥērem “tells us, then, …that in order to serve God’s purpose we are supposed to purge ourselves – our personal allotment of “land” – of all identities other than “in Christ,” just as the Israelite tribes were supposed to purge their allotted territory of all identities other than the people of the covenant…” (244). Further, the imagery employed in the conquests is meant “to portray …God driving away the forces of chaos in a recapitulation of the biblical creation story,” and is designed to bring us to interpret the story “as the establishment of a new created order and to interpret the covenant as the manifestation of the order” (256).Beyond the heavy dependence on Ancient Near Eastern tales to bolster their case, I found a few issues to be highly problematic. The first was the denial of a universal moral law for all peoples. This is implied in several places and stated clearly in a few others. For example, in one footnote, “…the definition of justice is relative to the context of the observers…This is why the Mosaic law cannot be understood in universal terms; it represents Near Eastern ideals, not absolute divine ideals” (121, fn4). One could add to this quotation statements made on pages 42-44, 76-78, 121, and 138, to point to a few places. This leads the authors to claim that the “cultural river or cognitive environment” in which Israel dwelt gave God’s people sufficient “moral knowledge” on how to be good (254). But it also seems to be the momentum that compels the authors to spill truck-loads of ink on stripping the moral justifications from the conquest narratives.“The Lost World of the Israelite Conquest” is a mixed bag. It is easy to read and comprehend. Also, it makes some valuable conclusions with regard to ḥērem. But then there are areas that are deeply disappointing and unhelpful, to say the least. If you are attempting to get your mind and heart around the conquest narratives, I would cautiously recommend reading this volume.Thanks to IVP Academic for providing, upon my request, the free copy of the book used for this review. I did not find any discussion of archaeology and its findings of any physical evidence of the Israelite Conquest of Canaan, following the Exodus. The Conquest is _apparently assumed_ by the author to be a fact? Several dates exist for the Exodus and Conquest: (1) The Hyksos Expulsion from Egypt circa 1540 BC, (2) a 1446 BC Exodus, based on 1 Kings 6:1, and (3) A Ramesside Exodus circa 1260 BC. Walton mentions Jericho several times (pages 172-73, 176, 190, 197, 217) but he does not address the site's archaeological evidence for an Israelite Conquest. In the Bible Joshua orders the city put to the torch after its walls have fallen to Israel's blaring trumpets and Israel has conquered the city. Is there any evidence of fallen burnt walls at Jericho? YES. In the 1950's Dame Kathleen Kenyon excavated the site and determined the city's LAST WALL was circa 1540 BC, and that the fallen wall had collapsed due to an earthquake. She also found evidence of a severe burning of the walls and buildings. She identified Egyptians as having destroyed Jericho, under Pharaoh Ahmoses I, founder of the Egyptian 18th Dynasty, who had expelled the Hyksos and chased them back to Canaan, capturing Canaan and making it part of the Egyptian Empire. The problem? Some sites in Moab conquered by Moses and Joshua were no earlier than Iron Age I (1200-1100 BC). Jericho was not a walled city in Iron Age I, to have its walls collapse and be set on fire by Joshua. An unwalled village had been erected at Jericho in the 10th century BC which was destroyed circa 587 BC by the Babylonians. My conclusions? The Bible has preserved two real historical events, documented by archaeological findings, separated in time by hundreds of years, the 1540 BC fall of Jericho and the 1200-1100 BC Iron Age I Conquest of Moab by Israel's Moses. The Bible tells us that after the Conquest Israel married the Canaanites, and worshipped their gods. Apparently the Iron Age I Canaanites, heirs of the Hyksos Expulsion, passed onto their Iron Age I Israelite new sons-in-law, the memory of an Exodus and burning of Jericho, and Israel, of Iron Age II (1100-600 BC) could claim, rightfully, to be descendants of the Hyksos Expulsion via intermarriages of Iron Age I. The biblical account being written in Iron Age II.

The writers want to revise the standard/traditional view of the Israelite conquest of Canaan. It is a lot for me to swallow. But it is carefully researched and a good 1/3 of the book is notes & Bibliography. I did not find it an easy read. However the authors lay out their theses in a clear manner. The main points are based on Hebrew words - especially the word "herem" - which are carefully explained and their uses documented. I am glad to have read it. I gives one a lot to think about.

Yes, the conquest was bloody - and incomplete. But contradictory cultures cannot long exist side by side, and this should make us think about the cultural contradictions that surround us, and infiltrate us, today. What is God's purpose? Why is He not in a hurry?

After jumping to the web to read about the products in this book, only to find they have been discontinued almost a decade ago, then hitting a paragraph stating that an advantage is "being able to record to your VCR" I came to the realization that I have been misled by the supposed publication date, probably a reprint or "conversion to Kindle" date. Although one can learn about some background fundamentals, you'll need to look elsewhere to find info on the latest hardware, software, & techniques.Each chapter in the Kindle version starts with the books author's names, their locations, and the words "Without Abstract" making it appear that this is not the version in the print book.

The other reviewer hits the nail on the head. With only about 13 pages devoted to describing the various video cameras available this book leaves you with more questions than answers about camera selection. I tracked down websites for the various cameras mentioned and I was unable to make a sensible comparison of their features. The cameras mentioned range from $275 to $800 and they clearly feel this is the best bang-for-the-buck. There is a passing mention of webcams, but little more. There is no mention at all of Celestron's Celestron NexImage Solar System Imager.That said, the bulk of the book is an in-depth step-by-step guide to manipulating the raw video you have captured and explains how to get the best possible images. The book is also filled with great photos, each listed with the telescope specs listed, but not always the camera model. There's also a nice little section on using a video camera for guiding.If I ever buy a video camera this book will be invaluable; but I'll have to find another source of information to guide my camera selection.

I bought this book as part of my introduction to video astronomy and am happy I did. Read it twice. Most of the book, about 60 or 181 pages discusses image processing in reasonable detail using Registax for stacking and Photoshop for post processing. Covers the topics in step by step fashion. Very helpful to the novice or someone still learning. The video camera and video capture sections are a bit dated but only because things have changed quickly in this field. There are lots and lots of great images in both black and white and color. Covers all the essentials including additional equipment and all of the techniques you need to know about.

All of these books are useful even though some are a bit dated now. I wish I owned the whole series.

This is the only book I have found that addresses the theory, operation and use in a clear simple fashion. I highly recommend it.

If you plan on using a frame accumulation camera for viewing or image capture this book is a great help.

Massey and Quirk's (M&Q) latest book is largely a prescriptive guide to operating a monochrome frame-accumulation video camera with a telescope. It tells the user what to do and when to do it. It describes the GSTAR-EX camera sold by Massey, and the well-known Registax program, and spends a lot of time in describing the steps the operator must go through to get results from the astrophoto session.M&Q spend most time on the GSTAR-EX camera sold by Massey, with only occasional mention of other competing products (StellaCam, Mintron, Watec, Imaging Source) and no mention at all of the Mallincam Hyper. This is not a criticism; if you use one of these other devices you will still find the book useful.Careful reading is needed to tease out equipment configuration which will work with a given telescope. This is one area where M&Q could have spent more time, as it represents the greatest cost to the isolated amateur trying to get things right. The writers are also exclusively PC-centric, but if you use Macs you may still find the broad steps applicable to the software you do use.The gallery at the end of the book is spellbinding, and shows M&Q's consummate abilities at the telescope. Enviable indeed. The section on "photographs from light polluted skies" gives some idea of what can be achieved with the GSTAR from suburbia using moderate telescopes (8 - 10" Newtonians and SCTs, 4" ED refractors, etc).My verdict - the book is a worthwhile addition to the amateur's library. It will not provide as much background theory as the amateur might wish for, but in its stated aim of introducing the amateur astronomer to video astronomy, it does a very good job.Disclaimer:- the author does not have a GSTAR-EX nor is affiliated with M&Q.

Love this book! We read every Friday night together as a family. Lots of great insight!

Wonderful explanations. Written in language middle schools and teens will understand and yet which address complex issues even adults question and seek answers to.

I bought this book for my 11 year old boy/girl twins, and I can't put it down. I look forward to reading it with them and discussing it together. It's an easy read with awesome insights and makes Torah subjects manageable. Absolutely love it, can't say enough about it.

LOVE this book for teens. I have been looking for a Torah Commentary to use with my middle-schoolers and this will work very nicely b/c it is easy enough to read, can be read in a few minutes, opens up lots of discussion, and is relevant to students' lives today!
