The first chapter almost discouraged me from reading more because of the author’s name dropping and shameless self-promotion of his band. But I’m glad I kept reading. The book’s substance grows with each chapter, crescendoing into a convincing alarm for the survival of democracy. The only post-Chapter-1 annoyances were the author’s admission after hundreds of pages that he still uses Facebook (probably for his band) and the perfunctory disclaimer so common among fellow Ivy Leaguers that Zuckerberg and other Facebook employees who repeatedly lied and violated user trust since the company’s inception “aren’t bad people,” just good people confused by narrow-minded business forces. It’s time to redefine bad people as people who do bad things, even if that includes folk from the white and other-toned Ivy League chumocracy.Zuckerberg repeatedly demonstrated sociopathy or psychopathy since his days at Harvard, and probably well before — qualities great for shareholder value. The author describes Zuck’s known transgressions in detail over and over. It shows how VC people turn a blind eye to unscrupulous behavior and assume good can come from evil then act surprised when a lizard matures into a dragon. To quote, Zuck, “Dumb f—s.”

I bought this when my own curiosity was spawned after watching an interview with Roger McNamee. His going back decades to early Silicon Valley and beyond, a time with which I was personally quite familiar, I found McNamee gained credibility with me. He introduces Facebook as a betterment for the world, grown out of Zuckerman’s genius and own idealism “From its earliest days, Facebook was a company of people with good intentions … focused on attracting the largest possible audience, not on monetization ... and sharing with friends.” McNamee shows that this was true until, as he himself was surprised by Facebook moving into uncharted territory—let’s say a different Business Model from where it began—now employing “persuasive techniques” employed by networks and advertisers, dependent on the harvesting of data, of personal information, easily available to them on Android phones, etc. and using these as many others have done as legitimate business tools, while “running afoul of the law of unintended consequences” and ushering a host of unintended and “undesirable behaviors.” Maybe all hard for Zuckerman to initially accept, but something he now owned, something the world is paying for, something that needs to be corrected.

In the context of government surveillance measures, Edward Snowden remarked that we are now “tagged animals, the primary difference being that we paid for the tags and they are in our pockets.” A very small number of huge extremely wealthy organizations have even greater access to those tags than the government does, recording every movement, communication with others, and even every train of thought as we interact with the web.Facebook is clearly the most worrisome of all the Big Data concerns. The social media giant exercises an incredible amount of influence over what information people see, with this influence often being sold to the highest bidder. Together with Amazon, Google and Apple, the US economy and society have become controlled by monopolies to an unparalleled degree, monopolies that monitor most of the population's behavior for solely commercial purposes. The second order effects that Facebook's money machine had on the world wide web and by extension on the world at large. Facebook inadvertently created an entire ecosystem that spews out misinformation a million pages at a time – charitable referred to as ‘Social Media Marketing’.Keep in mind: if you are not paying for it – you are the product.

I just finished the book and for the past week have been hesitating, maybe two or even three times before going to FB, Twitter, or even Amazon. Though the book’s eponymous title and Roger’s deepest experience is with FB, it’s a wake-up call to the use/abuse of metadata that’s so pervasive throughout our online journies. He sets the stage that our information is being abused, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and Venture Players have a greater incentive to maximize the use of our data than to preserve our privacy, or democracy, and unless there are downside ramifications (he has specific suggestions as a conversation starter), it’s going to get much worse, before it gets better. The author does a nice job presenting a turbulent timeline in a cohesive way. I was generally familiar with the general facts, but it was really helpful to read again many of the events, like Cambridge Analytica, with a much deeper slant than I remembered from news articles. We have a long way to go to once again get our privacy back where it belongs, with the individual and to regain trust in large data companies doing the right thing.

Having stayed fairly-well informed about Facebook's issues and the way advertising works on the internet, I wasn't sure how much new I'd learn from McNamee's book. But having it all put together into a single, coherent, storyline with plenty of insider perspective and some thoughtful advice on where we can and should go from here made it an excellent and worthwhile read.

Good points by a liberal author from a liberal perspective. Most political mentions were liberal, but then he would say that they were the only ones who cared. Exposes a problem we all have to acknowledge .

Brilliant narrative from a heavy-weight tech insider on how internet platforms, notably Facebook, have productized users' data for their own monetary gain with little or no regard to the social responsibility they owe society, and the resulting devastation it's causing. As someone who has spent a career in Silicon Valley, I agree with Roger's premise that we need to get back to technology that empowers people, or as he quotes Steve Jobs, "bicycles for the mind", while acknowledging that tech products are strategic, and that companies have an obligation to eliminate undesirable side effects BEFORE shipping.

The Three Most Important Things About Job Interviews  Boiling Things Down to Their Essence“How to interview” is a very popular subject: in magazines, on the Internet, on YouTube, blogs, and websites. Indeed, whole books have been written about the subject. If all this advice were put together, you’d have an encyclopedia to study. But you don’t have the time, or the patience, to read all that stuff. So, what I want to do in this small guide is to begin by boiling it all down, into a few essential ideas. Out of all the advice that is out there, here are the three most important things to know about job interviews. The First Most Important Thing to Know About InterviewsAn interview for a job is essentially just a conversation. Let’s use the metaphor of dating. This conversation is two people—employer and job-hunter—attempting to decide whether or not you both want to try “going steady.” A conversation requires two people, not one. This is not a silent auction. You’re thinking that in the interview it’s all up to the employer. Well, that’s not true. What the employer decides is critical, of course; but so is what you, the job-hunter, decide. If you doubt this last point, meditate on the word “quit.” It’s obvious you have something to say about taking this job, either now or later. (Choose Now.)Even if you’re at the end of your rope, flat broke, starving, and you’ve got to takeanything that comes along, at this point, you still have the right to ask intelligent questions during the interview about what you’re getting yourself into. You don’t just sit there, quietly. The job interview should always be a genuine conversation. It is important to notice that this conversation involves two stages. Most job-hunters assume it has just one: sell the employer on the idea that you’re the best person for the job. From the minute the interview begins, sell, sell, sell. No, no, no. A true conversation has two stages, for both participants: first, information gathering, and only then, selling yourself. What kind of information do you as job-hunter want to gather? That’s pretty simple. You use the interview to satisfy your every curiosity about the place, the job, and the people there. You try to find out “Do I like you all? Do I want to work here?” You want to find that out now, not have to quit in two months, or somewhere down the road.Only when you have finished your information gathering, only if you have concluded “Yes, I think I do want to work here,” do you then turn your energy toward the second phase of the conversation: marketing—selling them on the idea that You’re The One. It goes without saying that the interview is an information-gathering process for the employer as well. You already knew that. Whether one person or a team is interviewing you, they are using the interview(s) to find out “Do we like you? Do we want you? Do you have the skills, knowledge, or experience that we really need? Do you have the right attitude that we are looking for? And, how will you fit in with our other employees?”Only if they decide that they want you, do they then enter into their second phase: selling you on the idea that this would be a good place for you to work. So there you have it, the first most important thing about the interview: It is a two-way conversation, between you and the employer, that has two steps for each of you: collecting information, then—and only then—selling.

Not a whole lot of earth-shattering information here, but a good book for those first out on the job hunt. For me, most of this was just common sense.

The book had some good advice but I would recommend looking at other books before settling on this one. I found books more targeted towards practicing interview questions at my local library.

This book presents basic job interview preparations. I found that it offers useful information on job search and interview. However, this book brings brief, general information only. Good for starters.

everyone in todays job market needs a copy

Nothing I didn't know already

I used the skills that are suggested in this book. I'm waiting on a job offer, overall I think the skills are very effective.

Concise information to prepare you and get you in the right frame of mind for an interview.

Very good information, gave me lots to think about!

What Is the Declaration of Independence?  June 26, 1776, Philadelphia    The June heat in Philadelphia was blistering. Even before the sun came up, it was hot. Thomas Jefferson of Virginia did his best to stay cool as he wrote in the room he had rented on Market Street. He was writing a letter. But it was no ordinary letter.   Along with Jefferson, important men from all thirteen American colonies had come to Philadelphia. They planned to do something brave and dangerous. The colonies were declaring their freedom from Great Britain. They were going to create a new country—the United States of America.   Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write a public letter to the British king listing all the reasons why people in America were rebelling. Jefferson also wanted the letter to show other countries in Europe why this was the right decision for America. It took Jefferson—with help from others—only a couple of weeks to finish one of the most important documents in history: the Declaration of Independence.   Sending an announcement like this—a declaration—meant that the colonists in America would go to war. The British army was large and powerful. The colonists didn’t even have an army. The chances were slim that the Americans could win. Many would certainly die. And even if by some chance the colonists did win their freedom, could thirteen different colonies create a new country together?   For two weeks Jefferson worked on the Declaration of Independence. He sat at the small desk that he had made by hand. He wrote in ink on large sheets of paper with his quill pen.   Each day Jefferson would discuss the ideas for the declaration with some of the other men who had gathered in Philadelphia. After these talks, Jefferson would sometimes tear up his most recent draft of the declaration and start over.   He wanted to get every word just right. The declaration had to explain more than why the colonies could no longer live under British rule. More importantly, it had to tell the world what this new country hoped to stand for. It would not have a king. It would set up a government in which ordinary men decided the laws.   After the Declaration of Independence was finished, it was signed on July 4, 1776. It has become one of the most important statements of freedom. It has inspired people around the globe to fight for their freedom as well. Thomas Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” This meant that this new United States would treat everyone the same. Jefferson may not have realized how powerful those simple words would be for hundreds of years to come.         Chapter 1: A Battle for America  After Columbus set foot in the “New World” in 1492, many European countries wanted to rule different parts of North America. Great Britain, France, and Spain controlled almost the entire continent.   Great Britain had thirteen colonies along the east coast, where most settlers lived. France—Great Britain’s great rival—had the largest area of land, north and west of the colonies. But not many settlers lived there. Same with Spain—it had a bigger chunk of land than Great Britain but with far fewer people.   In 1754, Great Britain tried to grab more of North America by invading lands controlled by the French. This led to a war known as the French and Indian War.   A young lieutenant colonel named George Washington served in the British army, fighting against the French.   Most American colonists wanted Great Britain to win the war with France. And, after many years, it did. Great Britain doubled the area of land it controlled.   During the war, many British soldiers were sent to America to fight. That had been very costly. King George III had to borrow massive amounts of money from other countries.   After winning the war, King George III had to pay back what he owed. In the king’s mind, he had been defending the American colonies against the French. So he expected the colonies to help with the war debt. This angered people in America. It wasn’t the colonists’ idea to start the war. It had been fought because the king wanted more land. So why should Americans have to pay?   King George III didn’t listen to that argument. The British government—called Parliament—taxed the American colonists heavily to pay for the war debts. The American colonists had no one representing them in Parliament. It met in London, more than three thousand miles away and across the Atlantic Ocean. The colonists had no way to argue against the high taxes.   Did Parliament decide on all laws governing the colonies? No. There were local governments with men elected by their fellow colonists.   In Virginia, for example, there was the House of Burgesses. However, none of these groups had much power. In each colony, a royal governor made all the important decisions. Whatever the governor decided should be the law was the law. And he was appointed by the king. So Great Britain always had the final say about all laws and taxes. This got people in the colonies angry. Very angry.

I recently got this one because my kids are just about the right age to learn about this. Overall, I'd give it 3 or 3.5 stars because it cannot stand on it's own without explanation. My opinion: Skip the Introduction and go right into the first chapter. The introduction is a summary and as such does not represent the issue of slavery accurately because it tries to explain it (and fails) in only a couple of sentences. It explains the issue a little more accurately later in the book, although it could explain it better. Several of the founding fathers were opposed to slavery, but they knew that if they made an issue out of it (tried to abolish slavery at that time), there would be no Revolution and no independence from Great Britain. But I understand they only have so much room in a children's book. The other issue I had was with the grey box about 2/3 the way through the book that discusses women's role in the Declaration and American Revolution. It basically states that women did not have the rights that women do today and did not have the right to vote. It is implied that because of that, women didn't have much impact/role during these events. This is a real missed opportunity. The author could have shown that even though women didn't vote (and to be clear, many did not want to vote as evidenced by a large movement of women opposing suffrage later on), they had a great deal of influence in the American Revolution and the independence of our nation. A quick search on the Web, and you can get so many examples of the thousands of women who were camp followers on the battlefields helping the troops and other efforts. Also, when George Washington was elected president in 1789, it was primarily only landowners that could vote, and sometimes there were restrictions depending on religion. So in reality not only were women and different races excluded but many white men were excluded as well. Like any study of history, we have to try to avoid judging people in that time period by today's standards. Something that is very hard to do.

" 'Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. . . . This is the most famous part of the Declaration of Independence'."A fine tutorial of early American history preceding and including one of the most famous documents in world history, The Declaration of Independence. Take a look at the events that forced American colonists to separate themselves from Great Britain, while utilizing the time and talents of great patriot statesmen such as Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams.

I loved the stories and how everything is referenced in the Koran.

This is a great book of wisdom by an outstanding human soul

A classic on Islamic and Sufi spirituality, with stories, teachings, commentaries and more. I've benefited much, but have just dipped into this book, will read some parts many times, and will continue to explore the treasures inside. It's a book to keep and read, and read over and over.

Amazingly readable and inspiring.

Amazing wisdom I loved it
