Waiting for the Barbarians is not simply an indictment of imperialism, and it’s not a political book. It’s time and setting are indeterminate and the major characters are not named. In this generic setting we are given character studies, or even a morality play. The author, J. M. Coetzee, shows us how people, not unlike ourselves, cope with the good, boring, bad, and evil in an imperial outpost. And in his showing us the lives and problems of his characters in this harsh place, he avers what is delusional, what is real, and what is just unknown. The story is told by the aging civil magistrate of an unnamed imperial outpost of an unnamed empire. The magistrate copes with life by following distractions of womanizing, excavating the nearby ruins, and by deciphering the writings he finds in those ruins. When a detachment of the imperial army brings barbarian prisoners into town, the magistrate is attracted to a young woman among the captives. She is near-blind and crippled from the tortures she has suffered at the hands of an army officer, Colonel Joll. The magistrate’s obsession with the woman echoes his obsession with understanding the barbarians, the empire, his own desires, why people behave as they do, and basically everything. As he works out his relationship with the woman, it is easy to identify with his introspection and boundless curiosity. His inquisitiveness wins out even over attentiveness to his job, and he comes to pay a stiff price for it.There’s a picture here that resonates. Empires demand total allegiance and are harsh with those that give less. The magistrate lapses in his duties like many of us lapse on our jobs. Our cost is economic hardship—the threat of starvation, actually—only a degree or two away from the magistrate’s punishment.Metaphors like that make this a quote-worthy book. There’s also the magistrate’s introspections. The story is told completely from his viewpoint and we get his observations almost as if he were journaling. It’s well-done, however, and does not intefere with following the story. His insights often arise from emotional reactions to what he’s relating, such as when he feels some regret for not “lightening up” when he observes some playful good humor among his soldiers:"Truly, the world ought to belong to the singers and dancers! Futile bitterness, idle melancholy, empty regrets!"Or when he realizes he is not immune from the empire’s evil:"Why should it be inconceivable that the behemoth that trampled them will trample me too? I truly believe I am not afraid of death. What I shrink from, I believe, is the shame of dying as stupid and befuddled as I am."We see his fear of ignorance here, though it’s more often expressed as his burning desire to understand everything.Another big theme is the ever-present possibility for a person’s status to change, usually for the worse. It happens to several characters and we observe how they cope. It speaks to how we deny the possibility for calamity:"No one truly believes, despite the hysteria in the streets, that the world of tranquil certainties we were born into is about to be extinguished."Their fear of a coming attack by the “barbarians” motivates most conversations among the outpost’s population. It becomes the baseline of their existence. Even so, they go about their lives as before, though with their numbers reduced by desertion.Waiting for the Barbarians is not an action story, though it does involve soldiers in a fort, antagonisms, and struggles. Most of the story movement is character driven but it held my interest. The characters were interesting and identifiable. The themes were universal and accessible, leaving a haunting finish. The book was first published in 1980. Threads in it, however, strike me as being very relevant to this present time, especially in the US where the machinations of empire have become prominent. There is an anticipation of disaster in the air that mirrors waiting for barbarians (indeed, we are bombarded with “news” and commentary about the barbarian horde said to be murderously envious of our “freedoms”). The magistrate’s warning about the fragility of our tranquil certainties rings true, and the sound is a funeral bell’s hollow peal.

Took me a while to work my way through, but overall a very interesting account of a year in the life of a magistrate posted at the frontier of the Empire. He narrates the whole book, so not much dialogue (which is the reason it took me quite a while to finish this), but what dialogue there is is significant and telling of the characters you encounter through this man's eyes. Definitely not the style of writing I enjoy (as this was read for class), but a good book in its own right. The story still manages to feel like it does move, with vivid details weaved throughout, making you feel more a part of the setting, but it's a very passive voice throughout and not much excitement takes place. Again, I come back to this same word to describe this book: interesting.

The first person narrator is an old magistrate of a colony whose life changes after picking up a lantern one day to see what was going on and through subsequent incidents and circumstances, he becomes the examining/questioning voice over the human depravity as well as self examination. "But as for me, sustained by the toil of others, lacking civilized vices with which to fill my leisure, I pamper my melancholy and try to find in the vacuousness of the desert a special historical poignancy." to "..there was no way, once I had picked up the lantern, for me to put it down again. the knot loops in upon itself; I cannot find the end." Through motifs of lantern, sun glasses and blindness, and the dream sequences, the author wakes up the awareness of human conscience, depravity, frailties, hypocrisies, and the horror of pointless and inconsequential pursuit, "the image of a face masked by two black glassy insect eyes from which there comes no reciprocal gaze but only my doubled image cast back at me" The protagonist is a rather antihero type, a real human, complex and ambivalent with conscience, lust, fear and doubts, often faltering and needy, but genuinely interested in knowledge and his mind and his (sub)consciousness active all the time. He is transformed beyond his "great indifference to annihilation"

This book got me attracted to it because I have been trying to lose weight for quite some time now. And I've been hearing about the IIFYM too. And this book has cleared so many things I have in mind. Reading it has introduced me to the idea of If It Fits Your Macros and how I can lose weight without giving up too much of what I love to eat. And this is more than enough reason for me to try this for myself."IIFYM is going to allow you to lose weight, specifically from fat, without giving up your favorite foods!"And this got me motivated even more. This book has been concise and I appreciate everything I read here.

The book has some decent information, but it is really geared more towards those that might have the Myfitnesspal app or are looking into purchasing the app.It covers how to use the app, more than anything else.

Thorough how- to on using MFP wth IIFYM. This is not a recipe book. I will refer to it again I'm sure, it has great information.

Perfect.

I expected a little more than what I got. Not recipes or anything.

Great Book! A lot of new and useful information for people who wants to start controlling their calories.

Love the method of explanation. I highly recommended reading if you are interested in IIFYM. Very easy to understand. Thank you

This should be called how to use my fitness pal 101. Nothing but a tutorial on how to use the app to track your macros. Returning

Really, the title of my review says it all. Considering so many other people say it's a great book, it must have its merits but I sure can't see what they are. It's awfully written, it contains on average about one mistake per page, and I don't think it explains the concepts very well --on the contrary. It's incoherent, the index is awful (try looking up terms such as RGBA or RHW), and so is the printing.I strongly suggest you don't buy it based solely on its rating, as I did. Instead, browse through the book first and see if you like it. I wish I had done that...

This books is one of the most worthless titles ever to be released by a publishing company! Prima Tech editors should have seen it coming and scrapped this book before it ever hit the shelves. The book "Multiplayer Game Prgramming" by Todd Barren, a book designed to help you understand how to make multiplayer capable games, does a better job explaining DirectXGraphics (Direct3D8) than this trashy book does... This is a terrible waist of time. This book was reviewed by Game Developer Magazine, and explains a ton of mistakes, and complete inaccuracies...like:This book neglects to cover the most "revolutionary" features introduced in the DirectX8 SDK, vertex shaders and pixel shaders, but covers something as advaced as anisotropic reflection. So the shaders weren't left out because they were too complicated, who knows why they were left out! This book is littered with grammatical, technical, and formatting errors. Example: The exponants are left out of almost every equation in the book. Page 475 has 42 missing exponants. The reviewer also noted that the description of 3d rotation is just plain WRONG!Also this book contains an introduction to C++, not like many 3D programmers are going to need that. The entire physics chapter is only 8 pages long, and the first 2 of those 8 focuse only on 3D math. The reviewer was obveously very unhappy with what he found in the book, just as I was. He gave it 1 out of 5 stars. Oh and by the way, the reviewer was Mark Deloura, a programmer who has worked with OpenGL and it's predecessors for more than 10 years now, and very well known / respected.Heed mine and Mark Deloura's warning, don't buy this book!

This book has been enjoyable, but it was obviously published in a hurry--the author and editor should be ashamed. It reads like a rough draft--there are mistakes _everywhere_. Mistakes in the formulas, inconsistencies in the interfaces, and other glaring errors. Often times I was left re-reading a sentence multiple times, trying to discover the author's meaning. What's even more frustrating is that the author seems to skim over some subjects that require more explanation (the section about quaternions, for example). I was also left wishing that there was more sample code included with the book. The saddest part of all of this, is that even given the books glaring mistakes, it is still one of the best books out there on the subject. However, I can still not justify the money spent on this book. I think the free information on the web (the directx documentation, msdn, and the tutorials all over the web) is probably a better bet.

After reading the first 5 chapters - twice, I still don't know how to initialize direct x graphics. This little tidbit of information seems to have been skipped completely.Other than that, the rest of the book is filled with fairly useful information.Don't buy this book if you are completely new to Direct 3D as it will leave you with a big throbbing headache and a hole in your wallet.

About time someone wrote a book to cover the brand and spanking new DirectX 8 Graphics.DirectX 8 herald a new era of the API. It was a complete re-write. DirectDraw and Direct3D were combined into a easier and more powerful API called DirectX Graphics. This release also means that you'll be able to take your programming beyond the PC, to the Dreamcast and the X Box.I previously bought a book called "Introduction to Computer Game Programming with DirectX 8.0" by Ian Parberry. Unfortunately even though the material in the book was very good it didn't delve into the new DirectX API whatsoever, and in fact was just a cutdown version of the authors previous work "Learn Computer Game Programming with DirectX 7.0". So if you want a good beginners book look that one up, but if you want to keep up with the latest enhancements in the gaming world check this one out.

This is the book to get if you want to learn D3D version 8. Yes version 8!He has a good style and flows from one topic to the next very well. He also does not throw too much info at you at once. But you will be surprised how much he covers, in a very short amount of time. This book would be a good reference for intermediate D3D programmers as well (Just not all of it.)As a bonus, the DX8 SDK is on the CD. (Now downloads of the monster needed.)

I have to say this is a great book. Direct3D is a big pill to swallow (and so is the whole game programming idea) but this book made it a lot easier. ... this book is very easy to understand. Chapter 6, First Steps to Animation, is kind of hard because it is very math intensive, but I got through it. I would highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to make games.....

I wish other languages would get this level of attention from the support community. This book in intended to be used with a program called "perlcritic". But even before you use that, it is wise to also run "perltidy" to make sure you don't have syntax problems.I wish EVERY programming language had these two systems. Most people learning programming languages have little awareness that not only can you say the same thing many different ways, but also each different way has advantages and disadvantages.Javascript, VBScript, even VBasic should have these kinds of checkers. So, on ANY platform, consider PERL and this book to write scripts which are not only powerful but far more error free than almost any other language. This is the ultimate DWIMNWIS (Do What I Mean, Not What I Say). You'd be surprised what people say unintentionally ...

Perl is frequently criticized for being messy, hard to read, and unmaintainable... a complaint which is not without merit. Perl Best Practices is a direct response to that criticism, and goes a long way towards resolving those issues. Any team, or any individual for that matter, who is writing Perl code for a living should read this book and implement it's recommendations.Perl is an extraordinarily flexible language, which by design puts as few constraints on the programmer as possible. This freedom lets it do amazing things, and is part of what makes Perl so powerful, but it is a double-edged sword. The fact that the language itself does not force you to conform to an arbitrary style of "good" programming means that the onus is on the programmer to be self-disciplined. Perl Best Practices (PBP) provides guidelines for that self-discipline, and the tool it inspired - perlcritic - provides an enforcement mechanism.

I came to perl from a C++ background, and was initially horrified by the aspects of perl that control-freak-language developers usually are. However, after using it on and off for a couple of years it became my language of choice because it's so quick and easy to do things that just take too much coding in other languages. (As a friend of mine said who kept pushing me to get used to perl, "Yes, Dave, perl *is* the dark side, but once you go there you'll never want to go back...")Being A Good Developer I have purchased a number of perl books, and several of those have been useful. The problem is that there's a tremendous amount to remember, especially if you're not coding 100% in perl, especially since encyclopediac reference books just don't have time for the 'why' aspect. This book excels in a few important ways:1) There's always a 'why' given, and the right way and the wrong way are contrasted. This makes it, for me, far easier to remember things. It helps that the author uses English very well, and I virtually never find myself wondering what he meant. (In too many programming books, there's just not enough editing of the explanations, and very poor English.)2) While I don't always agree with the author's best practices, most of the time I do, and he always makes his case well.3) He shows both 'before and after' code, and gets the amount of code needed to make the point exactly right. I almost never find myself flipping past over-long examples, nor do I find myself not getting things because he's too concise. This book was both highly useful and a pleasure to read. (Perl is indeed the dark side, but now I revel in the dark side.)

If your company uses this as marching orders, it's a great reference. Taking this as gospel is more appropriate for CPAN submissions than in-house scripts.

The book has many good tips to write maintainable, readable code. Although the book is focused on Perl, many of the tips can be applied to many other languages (indenting, named arguments, variables and subroutine names, ...). You may not agree with all the tips. E.g., you might prefer indent by 3 spaces instead of 4. Those are minor details compared to the wealth of tips in the book. If you have been programming for a while, you might already developed many of the suggested practices (modularizing, localizing variables). You may still learn some practices, not as many as a beginner would.

Not only do these practices apply to Perl, but they apply to any language. I have told several people who are not perl progreammers to references several of the practices since they hold true in any language. This is a purely practical book on how to write code that anyone can read and follow with minmal effort. It covers various aspects of coding styles and gives clear concice reasons for WHY they should be used. You can for example, using this book, give a clear reference why spaces should be used over tabs, or why underscores in variable names are simply easier for humans to parse than CamelCase.

This book is a treasure. I love perl and have 2 bookshelves filled with perl books. Most of them I looked through once - and then kept for reference. But this book (Perl Best Practices) somehow pulled me in - and I ended up reading every page of it. Why? Because I was finding elegant ways of writing the code. Note that I was writing Perl scripts every day for the last 10 years. So you would think I don't need instruction. Still after reading the PBP book, I am now doing many things differently.Damian compares different styles of writing the code, explains potential problems (sometimes very subtle and difficult to catch), and explains how to write the code which is more readable and maintainable.I highly recommend this book. Whether you are a newbee or a veteran - you will enjoy reading it.

Locomotive (Caldecott Medal Book), by Brian Floca

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-It all started with "a new road of rails/made for people to ride" where "covered wagons used to crawl." Almost 150 years ago-just after the Civil War-the completion of the transcontinental railway radically changed both this country's landscape and the opportunities of its people. The book traces the advent of cross-country train travel, focusing on an early trip from Omaha to Sacramento. As in Moonshot (2009) and Lightship (2007, both S & S), Floca proves himself masterful with words, art, and ideas. The book's large format offers space for a robust story in a hefty package of information. Set in well-paced blank verse, the text begins with a quick sketch of "how this road was built" and moves abruptly to the passengers on the platform and the approaching train. The author smoothly integrates descriptions of the structure and mechanics of the locomotive, tasks of crew members, passing landscapes, and experiences of passengers. Simply sketched people and backgrounds, striking views of the locomotive, and broad scenes of unpopulated terrain are framed in small vignettes or sweep across the page. Though a bit technical in explaining engine parts, the travelogue scheme will read aloud nicely and also offers absorbing details for leisurely personal reading. Substantial introductory and concluding sections serve older readers. There's also a detailed explanation of the author's efforts and sources in exploring his subject. Train buffs and history fans of many ages will find much to savor in this gorgeously rendered and intelligent effort.-Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Bostonα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Floca follows up the acclaimed Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 (2009) with this ebullient, breathtaking look at a family’s 1869 journey from Omaha to Sacramento via the newly completed Transcontinental Railroad. The unnamed family is a launching point for Floca’s irrepressible exploration into, well, everything about early rail travel, from crew responsibilities and machinery specifics to the sensory thrills of a bridge rumbling beneath and the wind blasting into your face. The substantial text is delivered in nonrhyming stanzas as enlightening as they are poetic: the “smoke and cinders, / ash and sweat” of the coal engine and the Great Plains stretching out “empty as an ocean.” Blasting through these artful compositions are the bellows of the conductor (“FULL STEAM AHEAD”) and the scream of the train whistle, so loud that it bleeds off the page: “WHOOOOOOO!” Font styles swap restlessly to best embody each noise (see the blunt, bold “SPIT” versus the ornate, ballooning “HUFF HUFF HUFF”). Just as heart pounding are Floca’s bold, detailed watercolors, which swap massive close-ups of barreling locomotives with sweeping bird’s-eye views that show how even these metal giants were dwarfed by nature. It’s impossible to turn a page without learning something, but it’s these multiple wow moments that will knock readers from their chairs. Fantastic opening and closing notes make this the book for young train enthusiasts. Grades K-3. --Daniel Kraus

I bought this book for my grandson who loves trains. While I didn't read it, my husband, a retired railroader, did and pronounced the book a beautiful book. He and our grandson share their love of trains. The pictures are lovely and the text is well written according to my husband.

This book is a gem. The illustrations are gorgeous and the text is engaging. I've read this book for my child at least 30 times as a library checkout and finally decided to purchase a copy. The book follows the journey of a train across the transcontinental railway. My little one loves it, but this is also a great read for older children learning about the railroad. The front and back of the book have additional information about tains and the transcontinental railway.Even the cover under the book jacket has a beautiful picture of bison. The book is well constructed.

I can see why Locomotive won the Caldecott. This is such a beautiful book and packed full of information too. I learned a lot reading this book with my 7-year-old. More than just facts, this book really gives you a feeling for what is what like in 1869 to either work on the railroad or to be a passenger. I think this book could easily be enjoyed by a middle grader studying American history. We visited a large train museum on vacation last summer and I wish we had read this book first. Instead, we did enjoy reminiscing about things we saw on that trip that tied into this story. Anyway, fun, beautiful, informative book to be enjoyed by a large range of ages.

This is a wonderful picture book for kids who think they are too old for picture books. It is about the height of mid-nineteenth century technology, the steam locomotive. Two kids and their mother taking the train from Omaha, Nebraska to San Francisco. As they travel, we see what they are seeing out the train windows, we learn about the building of the railroads and the functions of each part of the train. We learn about the jobs of the conductor, the engineer and the fireman and how they keep everything running smoothly. Every part of this book, even the endpapers will have kids pouring over the details. It is part narrative, part geography and part technology. A worthy successor to the author's previous work, "Moonshot".

Locomotive is one of Julien's favorite books. There are so many great reviews of this book that the video, and these comments, do not add too much. The illustrations get the most attention but the text really introduces all elements of the train, and life on the train, to the reader. Children of all ages will be engaged and excited and will ask many questions on each page. Truly a book that sparks interest and inspires learning. Check out more of Julien's reviews on his Youtube channel - julesandmetv

Purchased for reading with my 4 year-old grandson whose dad runs freight trains. Was concerned it wouldn't hold his attention because there were many words to read and the images are past era. However, my grandson was enthralled with it. He learned some things that prompted conversation with his dad about the trains he engineers for work.

If you are looking for a book to read to a small child, I would not recommend this one. The story is quite long and I can't see a child under 6 sitting long enough to finish it. That said, the pictures are beautiful and it is a nice, informative story. It is a great book for a child who is interested in trains because of the pictures alone. An early reader would probably have trouble reading the text, but they will probably enjoy having it read to them. I can see this being a book that grows with the child, from looking at the pictures as a preschooler, to having it read to them as an early elementary student, to reading to themselves as their reading skills improve. I do absolutely recommend this book, but your purpose for ordering will determine the age it is appropriate for.

Love reading this book. The level of detail is fun for the kids and adults reading. The train sounds are a real highlight for the kids to read along with. And it wouldn't be a Brian Floca book without knowing how the potty works on a train. The rhythm and meter of the words makes this so enjoyable to read. Above and beyond the other Caldecott books we have.
