Over the past two years I've spent many evenings and weekends teaching myself everything I can about IA/UX/IxD and so have surveyed many of the books available. For the most part those books can be broken into two categories. The first are theory books (About Face 3,Information Architecture for the World Wide Web) and design pattern books (Designing Interfaces,Designing Web Interfaces) (Not to mention user research books but that's a whole different step of the process).Unfortunately, I haven't found too many books that focus on the skills of sketching a user experience. I have read and worked through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Visual Meetings but found the first was really focused on fine art sketching and the later is really focused on meetings and sharing general ideas with people. Sketching User Experiences is a good in between that focuses on the practical skills of sketching interfaces and experiences and communicating that to others.The book starts with very basic sketching exercises and by the end gets into really fun and tangible advanced techniques. Some of the more advanced techniques I loved involve creating sketches from photos, creating hybrid sketches (photos + sketches) and building poster board prototypes of physical devices. Each exercise in the book is discrete and has a clear set of instructions, an explanation of how it fits into the user-centered design process and references to follow up with. Each exercise was structured enough that if you want to pick and choose things to do it's perfect for that.All in all I would recommend this book for IA/UX/IxD professionals of all levels and anyone else who needs to communicate user experiences to others. I especially think this book would be useful for developers who are looking for a better way to express their ideas (or frustration) to clients, designers and other stakeholders because there is a big enough range of exercises that he should be able to find something that works.The other place I would recommend this book would be for an advanced user interfaces undergrad/graduate level college course. There's enough work in here to make for a -really- fun semester's worth of work. I hope a professor picks this up and builds a course around it :)Happy sketching :)

I use this book regularly in classes to teach software developers what a basic user experience design process looks like. It it accessible and concise. It has lots of illustrations and examples, and includes useful exercises.If you or your team would like to work on more modern user interfaces, this book will guide you through part of the process to do it. It's not really about the understanding phase of design, so it doesn't cover aspects such as user observation, but it covers the sketching phase quite well.If you like it, you can move on to the conceptual book that inspired this one: Sketching User Experiences: Getting the Design Right and the Right Design by Bill Buxton. You might also be interested in Bill Buxton's videos, which are available on the usual video sites.

I am not a designer - but have been reading a lot about design and this is by far one of the most practical books you will buy. Some of the techniques are practical and wil change the way you do wireframes. I guess these are commonplace techniques used by designers but for non-designers it just changes your perspective. This is a true workbook, so be prepared to spend time doing versus reading-you wont be disappointed especially if you are an engineer looking to learn design. It is not a book about principles of design (there are many books out there that do that), this is a book about practical, real world techniques.Before reading this book I thought sketching is for the "creative designers", but the techniques here (take pictures, trace) make it really simple.

Especially for people who are and are not artists (as in everyone), this book presents using sketching for any project that requires innovation and multiple steps. In the first pages, it demonstrates that ideas can be expanded, discarded for something better, improved and entirely new approaches realized. While this is available in all disciplines, sketching is a good medium for capturing and exploring ideas from daily exposures. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading and using the ideas.

This book provides several methods with detailed descriptions an tips to sketch your idea, perform interaction design, animate interaction, present sketch and collect feedback, also covering guidelines to designing with teams and presenting to groups.

Amazing review of sketching and the thought process behind sketching.Easy to follow with lots of pictures, examples, and exercises. Would highly recommenced to product managers or UI designers looking to improve their sketching skills.

The Workbook is a great hands-on way to learn the thought process of UX design. It is very easy to follow, and it will get you in the habit of observing interfaces around you...and definitely get you sketching.I found that a lot of their suggestions for collecting images, ideas, etc could be done with Pinterest, but as I said before, this is a very hands-on book, and the authors seem to prefer physical collections over virtual ones.Great ideas for creating templates to work from, using office supplies to make iterations, and more :)As someone interested in becoming a UX designer I know this will be a valuable resource!

Backed by my own 30 years in development and QA (btw, most of the time with MVS and more with Windows than with Unix), I'd underline almost every single point Eric makes in this comprehensive work. Period.One or the other of you may object his casual style, however, it doesn't change a bit of the substance.His criticism on Windows may appear somewhat biting, but let me tell you, having become quite familiar with both: touché. I honestly do admire Microsoft for what they managed to squeeze out of an OS born in a hurry, even in a technical sense. But that won't bridge the gap between Unix ("Do One Thing Well") and MS-DOS/Windows (hurried into "Do OnThing well" and had an automatic spelling checker flip the typo afterwards).

Others have found that the INTP Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the preferred personality type for (software) architecting team membership. After I wondered how to be more "philosophical", this book helped by teaching about the Unix Zen-like philosophy. If you think this way, you should be able to improve a design.Chapter 3 "Contracts: Comparing the Unix Philosophy with Others" starts with this quote from a Dilbert newsletter, "If you have any trouble sounding condescending, find a Unix user to show you how it's done." Nevertheless, I am more likely to be less critical and more philosophical about designs after learning about the OS designs of VMS, MacOS, OS/2, Windows NT, BeOS, MVS, VM/CMS, and Linux.The last chapter titled "Futures: Dangers and Opportunities" summarizes the philosophical differences between operating system design in the past and in the present with Linux. By the time I got to this last chapter, I see that this book is a real eye opener and you will think "philosophically" about software designs. Understanding history does help. The next generation is thinking about usability along with the open design patterns of the OS. This is paradigm shift for Unix and Windows gurus.Besides learning about how to think philosophically, this book is a gold mine to a software engineer. For example, chapter 2 "Basics of the Unix Philosophy" covers 17 rules on design that every software engineer needs. Additionally, chapter 16 "Reuse: On Not Reinventing the Wheel" is a hoot. Today, some professors do grade on code readability, style, and program documentation.Chapter 14 "Languages: To C or Not To C?" is another learning experience on language choice. I cannot help but wonder if the authors are not Zen-like enough because of their love of their offspring C, when today there is a growing community using Java for embedded Linux software, because of its portability, improved memory management, and eliminated pointer security problems. Platform neutral language and OS.Chapter 19 "Open Source: Programming in the New Unix Community", should be required reading for a software engineer. We need to learn about the open source software development process.If there were only time, this book would make an excellent addition to a computer science OS or software engineering course. Software architects need this book. The Masters have a done a great job by contributing to this.

My favorite technical reference. very recommended for anyone. it's an eye-opener and it's applicable in theory to all systems, not just computer systems.Bought this to support the author though I already read a pirated copy years ago.

Learn a lot about the thoughts and rationales behind C and UNIX.Good reading. Entertaining, generally engaging.A teeny bit too much pride and pontificating at times, but he can do that, because he has earned it.

Good book, great qualiy !!!

This book is written by Eric S. Raymond, who wrote ncurses and a large part of GNU Emacs, and thus one should expect a large amount of Unix and GNU bias. I don't think either are inappropriately placed, especially in a book like this. Raymond covers just about every topic that applies to the "tranditional" Unix programmer, from a historical as well as contemporary perspective, and offers a large amount of insight into each topic.For someone new to Unix, wishing to understand its origins and design philisophy, or for anyone developing on Unix (especially traditional development in C or C++) this book is highly applicable. His discussions of transparency and modularity were also very practical and useful.

Very slow read...I felt like I was always waiting for something to happen. And it didn't. After reading the summary, I was intrigued by this book. But sadly, I didn't even finish it.

I liked this book immensely and had trouble putting it down. It drew me in immediately and never let up in regards to wanting to know what the characters were doing and thinking. And I’ve always loved the “SWF” type of story (referring to the movie in which one woman becomes obsessed with another, basically wanting her life).All of the characters are extremely well-fleshed out and multi-dimensional. I liked the atmospheric qualities of the book — I felt I could see the sights, smell the smells, feel the feelings of the characters. I learned quite a few new words and things about the arts, which was interesting. I related so much to the main character and her insecurities. I think many of us could. In fact, as a testament to the author, I felt a few uncomfortable truths about myself in relation to those insecurities.I love books like this in which the people I’m reading about are so realistic: They have flaws, they mess up, they make terrible choices ... I don’t feel as though I’m reading about cardboard cutouts. Sometimes I wanted to smack them, sometimes I wanted to hug them. And there was one shocking scene I truly didn’t see coming — I literally gasped.The book had a very natural flow from beginning to end, and the ending was very realistic (although I’d love a sequel). I need to know what everyone is up to now!This author is outstandingly talented and I hope to read many more of her books.

What happens when you become so close to a friend or neighbor ? Are you drawn closer or too close?Familiarity Breeds Contempt? OR does Familiarity Breed?People at #9 is a story of neighbors and their close relationships. A very good read and the ending might be predicable but that's is up to the reader.A very good book and I recommend it.

I felt there were large chunks that must have been left in the cutting room floor....too many little things went unexplained, without necessary details. Characters weren't fully developed and that was frustrating because you expected to learn why Dash was the way he was, or get more info about Gav's art or Lou's film or Sarah's novel. The plot crept ... To a slow end.

Good Book. It had me hooked to the end. Just not knowing what was going to happen next was exciting. Very good writing.

I can't say this was a fun read but it was engaging in a train wreck sort of way. I wanted to see what the falling out we're told happened at the outset was going to be like. As the fallout is expected, the suspense is subdued but there was still a decent build up of tension between the couples. It's not a when but a how spectacularly will it all come crashing down into a mess. This did feel like it took a bit of time getting there and once it did, we don't see the details of the fallout, the confrontations are absent. It was very abrupt and then it's eighteen months later before the story ties up and shows us the door.There are no heroes here and I can say that I'm not on anyone's side in this mess. They're all culpable and frankly only brought out the worst qualities in one another. Sara's a complete flake & very juvenile throughout. Lou & Gavin are shockingly messy & unconscionable. Lou's dilettantism was so transparent that only someone as teen girl star struck as Sara could miss it. Neil was least objectionable and even with his single transgression, I still more felt for him as Sara was playing the martyr and withholding her own sins. Have to say though, there's a very satisfying moment when a betrayal is revealed to someone who was doing their level best to do the same to someone else.I'd read another by Felicity Everett. She had a flair for prose that I enjoyed. Recommended if you need something to take along for the weekend.

This was a strange book for me. Although it kept my attention on the whole throughout, I finished the book feeling rather flat. There was a nice build up for the characters and some bubbling under potential highs, but they never quite surfaced properly for me. I think the reasons for that could have been that I didn't quite connect with the characters fully and also, some of the things that they did just didn't gel for me. I'd really love to expand on some of these here, for credibility, but I thing doing this would mean spoilers and that's something I just don't do in reviews.Sara and Neil have new neighbours. They intrigue Sara and she contrives a meeting between herself and Lou. They appear to hit it off and the two couples subsequently become friends. As the relationship develops, cracks start to appear and it soon becomes evident that the relationship is becoming unhealthy. But the two couples crack on, Sara and Neil making some very big changes in their lives. Changes that I had a bit of a hard time swallowing occasionally. Changes that, on the face of it, as a reader, one step removed from the characters, I just sat there and thought "what?!" It seemed that signs were ignored and, when it all blew up, I thought of several more important reasons for it to have happened earlier in the relationship. Sara must have been a pretty big camel for her to have taken what happened on her back before the, slightly lesser, thing that broke it occurred.I said that I didn't connect with the characters. I think that is more to do with me than the actual characters. I guess, like life, you just don't gel with everyone and I don't think I had enough in common with them to really care that much about them. They also did some pretty silly things too, which irked me a bit. I did connect in some way though as I did shout at them a fair few times throughout the book so I guess I have just contradicted myself re the caring thing in a way!Reading that back, it should have been a book I gave up on but, and this is credit to the author, she did keep me reading. Kept my attention more or less throughout and it was a book that I did finish quite quickly, so there is something there. I think possibly that this may not have been the right book for me but, my rule is, if I finish a book, I post a review. And I did finish this one, albeit it not with a satisfied feeling at the end. Which leads me to think that it is probably a good book, just not a good book for me. I will be interested in reading others' thoughts on it once it has been released.The crux: would I read another by this author? Yes, I probably would as I did get on with the author's writing style, but I would cherry pick and definitely make use of the sample system.My thanks go to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

But not before you plug your last book at the beginning of every paragraph and again at the end of every paragraph. This is all fluff and like so many other books...a constant plug for something else they are selling...in this case...Gary is still trying to sell his other book and he let's you know how wonder it is every chance he gets. Don't believe the hype people. You can go on to upwork and hire companies that do nothing but buy your merchandise or your books and then write 5 star reviews. This is epidemic in todays world. No way a book with no substance could get so many good reviews. Save your hard earned cash. Whatever answers you were looking for are not in this book. I'll give you an example. One story teller goes into length about the podcast they started and how it changed their business. That is like saying, "I started a website and then I had sales." Wow! That's amazing! If this is all it takes to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside then you will love this book. If you want more details or a point in the right direction in terms of what were the pros and cons of starting the podcast...what type of industry is best suited podcasting...what were some tips for someone who might want to start a podcast...than you won't get them in this book. And each and every topic is like this. Just story telling. Just words to take up pages. Nothing of substance. Irritating these guys keep pumping and dumping garbage like this. Its shameful.

The content is very shallow. I already knew all the info presented here. I was expecting way more valuable content from Gary.If you need a general introduction to all social media platforms, then this book will work for you.I also didn’t like how he makes sound everything easy from FB ads to shooting videos.

First - I love Gary and his no BS approach.Second - The back contains celebrity friends clearly writing a blurb to help Gary promote his book. I feel the marketing for this book and celebrity recommendations are misleading. If I had the desire to be a you-tuber or make money on social media I probably would have given it a low 4 star rating. But, I don't and I am not.I believe the book topped the charts due to its marketing and Gary offering incentives if they purchased 1000+ books. Not because the book is that great. I am sure after a few weeks the hype will die and people will start talking about the actual substance.I love Gary but the book isn't more than a bunch short stories about social media on how to possibly get likes and shares.I believe it topped the charts due to its original marketing. I'm sure it will die off

I only knew he uses the "F" word probably more than 100 times a day.Making the story short, I had heard that Gary knew a lot about social media and was recommended to read one of his previous books "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook" which got me to study more of who Gary was. Eventually, I went to his website and found out he had launched a new book "Crushing It".Maybe your reading this to know whether you should buy this book or not. I'm so grateful I came across this book. It has completely changed my life, my mind, and it positioned me in a new direction in which I plan to go. For example, I'm currently trying to build an online business which I hoped it could make $6,000 a month. Applying Gary's mindset, I am now certain that I can probably double that amount. "Why do GOOD, when you can do GREAT", right?If you have a business, buy this book; if you're planning on creating a business, buy this book; if you feel unhappy with your life, buy this book; if you feel unhappy at work, buy this book; if you're looking for inspiration, buy this book; if your husband/wife cheated on you, nope, wrong book.
