This dark, honest book is the story of Stevie, a 17-year-old struggling with an eating disorder and convinced that the only way she can atone for past mistakes is by killing herself on the anniversary of her brother’s death. When her dad checks her into a treatment center, the anniversary is 27 days away, so Stevie knows she won’t make it through the full treatment. In fact, in the beginning, she refuses to believe that she needs help—in her mind, the only solution to the pain she’s shoved away inside is for her to die.Needless to say, Paperweight is not a light-hearted contemporary. It is not a book to be picked up lightly. And yet, it’s the most realistic portrayal of not only anorexia/bulimia, but of pure, self-hating, suicidal depression that I’ve ever encountered. By immersing the reader inside Stevie’s perspective, alternating the present day treatment center narrative with memories of what led her down this road in the first place, Meg Haston shows how eating disorders are about so much more than food, and adds a mystery element that builds suspense throughout. This is also one of those rare books where not a single sentence is wasted, where the gorgeous language itself is enough to keep you reading.A big reason this is 5 stars for me is the honesty with which Haston portrays the recovery process. It’s so easy to write a story about someone who goes from totally suicidal to totally “fixed” by the end of the story—but be warned, Paperweight is not that story. Rather, Haston writes the honest truth about recovery: it’s a long, brutal road, filled with temptations, because eating disorders (and depression) are not something that can be “cured” like the flu. While this might sound horribly depressing, it’s honestly refreshing to someone who’s struggled with depression for the better part of 10 years—because it’s true. You get better slowly, and sometimes you end up getting worse again and having to start all over, but it’s better than nothing because you’re alive. Books like this go a long way toward destigmatizing what it’s really like to live with a mental illness, not just “suffer” from one and then get better.full disclosure: This book could be very triggering if you’re struggling with depression, self-harm/suicidal thoughts, or an eating disorder. Mostly, I recommend this book to folks who’ve never struggled with depression or eating disorders. Read this with an open mind, allow yourself to feel what Stevie feels, and you’ll be a lot closer to understanding what these disorders really do to a person.

When reading a novel about mental illness, including anorexia or bulimia, it's always easy to tell which are written by the survivors of the disease and which are written by the onlookers of the disease, those who have witnessed the suffering of others and thus think they have a thorough understanding of what it means to survive while living with mental illness. This book is the perfect example of that. As someone who has battled an eating disorder for nearly 20 years, I can firmly state that this novel only touches on the surface of what it means to fight the battle. It touches on some of the more serious aspects, makes sure to highlight all the ugly medical "side effects", but it doesn't let you truly feel the suffering as only a memoir can. I believe the writer is a therapist, and that makes perfect sense to me. This is a story written by someone who knows all the technicalities of illness, without having to live it for herself.

I cried my way through the second half of this book. I don't have an eating disorder, but I do have a chronic disease (MS) that first manifested soon after the death of a loved one, as is similarly the case with Stevie, the main character in this book. Other reviewers have commented that this book is liable to trigger an emotional response, and I agree. For me, that's not a bad thing. I actually found it cathartic to liberate all the pent-up emotions I didn't realize I still had within me after 10 years. This book reads like a diary, though it is fiction. It tells the story of Stevie, a 17-year-old bulimic who is sent to an eating disorder treatment center in a New Mexico desert. She is secretly planning to commit suicide on the 1-year anniversary of her brother's death. The characters and the dialogue are so true to life, probably because the author is herself an eating disorder survivor and a therapist, and yet the plot is not oppressive and heavy. It moves quickly; I finished it in 2 days.

Stevie has problems. Ranging from her mother abandoning her, blaming herself for her brothers death, and anorexia. Her father sends her to a treatment facility to get better, but she already has plans to off herself on the 1 yr anniversary of her brothers death. This book focuses on such heavy topics but the writing style is so easy. I was shocked to find how moved I was by the end. The last scene was wonderful and had me in tears. I was so attached to these characters, especially Stevie. This is a story of healing, forgiveness, and finding your worth. I never dealt with an eating disorder, but I found myself relating to Stevie as far as self esteem and worth goes. I highly reccomend this book. It only lacks one star because again, easy writing style. As great as this was, I wish it dug just a little bit deaper. As far as pain and suffering and starvation and binging and purging... i felt a lot of feels, but i wanted to feel more.

I gave Haston's novel 5 stars because of one word: authentic. Not once did I feel a character or event was contrived. I've been through my own share of similar situations, and even to my critical eye, was there any exaggeration of character or event. Even Eden was convincing to me. Following Stevie as she goes from a hardened, set-in - stone orientation toward her life after her brother's death, to a cracking of that rigidity has been rewarding and enriching to my own life. There is always hope in every tragedy. But Stevie's struggle is a very real story of the difficulty of finding that hope workout God-occasioned help. I highly recommend PAPERWEIGHT.

This book was a pretty good book, honestly. I mean, at the beginning it was kind of dull but towards the end it got more interesting. Not the best I've ever read but not the worst. Overall, a good book. I recommend it.

I am used to the lonely planet and rough guide style travel books and I have only used two from the 'off the beaten path series'. This book is one of the very very few books you can use for your travel to the mountain state. It is generally a good guide but there are few points it needs to get improved to become a more practical source:Pros:-I have gone through amazon book store and this is one of the two books available for West Virginia (other is the explorer's guide) and between this two this is more regularly updated so this is your best option to take with you-it covers almost all points of interest and gives practical information about them-it is lightweight ( and easy to take with you everywhere.-the book is well organized in different sections and that makes planning the trip easier.-the places to eat and stay section can be helpful and offers a good selectionCons:-no photos at all... the cover photo is the only photo in the whole book. I don't want a color book style travel book but a few photos per section would make it more grasping.-The introduction chapter is almost non-existent. It is barely two pages and lacks historical, cultural and geographical details plus trip advices and best time to visit guides to get you into the atmosphere-It lacks good maps. I don't look for very sophisticated ones, just simple plans which show different attraction sites relative to each other and may be the roads connecting them.-It does not give information about opening hours or admission fees for most of the places. So You may get surprised when something you drove for 45 minutes is closed or ridiculously expensive-It lacks the lonely planet-rough guide style introductory chapter. It would be nice to have, say 20 best places to visit section with some photos and may be on the first page of each geographical section it could have mentioned few places most prominent attractions on a simple map.Over all, like it or not you need this book for a proper trip to West Virginia. Among the limited options this stands out and without it I would not be able to plan a trip to here. However you may find it a little difficult to follow and may need some internet help, print some maps before deciding on where to visit and what to omit.

I really like the "Off the Beaten Path" books, and this one is no exception. If you are traveling to a particular area in the state, you can locate several places in the area that you may not find in other reference guides. West Virginia was well known for its glass manufacturing; Ron Hinkle Glass in Buckhannon is definitely worth visiting and purchasing a piece, as well as Blenko Glass in Milton. The popular "Fiestaware" dishes are Made in Newell, West Virginia by the Homer Laughlin China Company. For people who love the outdoors, off of Rt. 219 Droop Mountain Battlefield area and Beartown State Park are worth seeing. Charleston's Capitol Building is worthing seeing, with its massive crystal chandalier from Europe and its massive white marble pillars on the inside. Their cultural museum is a definite MUST SEE, like walking a time line through history, plus they will have a display of blue-ribbon quilts occasionally.

Great travel guide

Wonderful book

Fun and interesting.

Memoirs of My Nervous Illness (New York Review Books Classics), by Daniel Paul Schreber Rosemary Dinnage

Amazon.com Review

Daniel Paul Schreber began Memoirs of my Nervous Illness in February 1900 while confined in an asylum, as part of an appeal for release. Schreber, second son (the first committed suicide) of an abusive father, was at the peak of a brilliant career in Leipzig when he was appointed Presiding Judge of the Saxon High Court of Appeals. Alas, the stress of his new job proved too much for him, and before long he was hearing voices and feeling suicidal. Within weeks he was committed, having rapidly descended into madness, and was placed under the care of Dr. Paul Emil Flechsig. From the start, Schreber struggled to make sense of what he was seeing and hearing, and in fact Memoirs is so lucid and self-aware, so internally consistent and insightful, that he was released on its strength. Still, reading this man's prose is a lesson in subjective reality, by turns funny and terrifying. I existed frequently without a stomach.... In the case of any other human being this would have resulted in natural pus formation with an inevitably fatal outcome; but the food pulp could not damage my body because all impure matter in it was soaked up again by the rays. As Christianity alone could not explain what seemed to be happening to him, Schreber pieced together a complex theology involving a divided God with dark and light incarnations, whose "rays" and "nerves" interacted in various ways with humans. God was also his personal tormentor, in league with Flechsig to commit "soul-murder" by manipulating his nerves. Further, Schreber believed that he was being literally "unmanned" so that God could sexually violate him and conceive a new human race: "But as soon as I am alone with God ... I must continually or at least at certain times strive to give divine rays the impression of a woman in the height of sexual delight..." Schreber had a hard time believing in the "fleeting-improvised-men" who flitted in and out of his life, and grew convinced that he was the only human left in a world of shadows. But he did know that something was wrong. He would hear the birds in the asylum's garden ask him, over and over, "Are you not ashamed?" And he was aware that his bellowing, banging on the piano, and other bodily manifestations of God's manipulation of his nerves (or "miracles") were startling to others, to say the least. Many of Schreber's delusions had to do with escaping his body--the constant babble of thousands of voices in his head were infuriating, as was his inability to cease thinking: The sound which reaches my own ear--hundreds of times every day--is so definite that it cannot be a hallucination. The genuine "cries of help" are always instantly followed by the phrase which has been learnt by rote: "If only the cursed cries of help would stop." Memoirs of My Nervous Illness succeeds on many levels: as a memoir, as imaginative literature, and as a serious work of mythology. Flechsig makes a menacing and inscrutable villain, representing materialistic thinking and conventional reality--no help at all. Schreber, meanwhile, is the classic hero, struggling to stay sane in a cruel and capricious universe. --Therese Littleton

I cannot get past the tiny print--And I don't need glasses to read up close! I won't force myself to read lines of print that small. (And I think it's a translation, which makes it more of a trial!)

Not finished yet. A very hard read. Not enthused about the writing style. I've been reading it for several months now and just can't quite get it done. But there are some very plausible concepts to what is being spoken about, for instance I see some correlations with some of the Seth concepts about reality, space and time. I guess overall it's an okay book, just time consuming.

I wonder what cases he was working on while he was a judge and wonder if his work on them had threatened anyone in power, and thus Schreber was targeted. If true, I don't think they expected Schreber to experience what he did and even less so, bravely and courageously write it down for all the world to see. What did he see? Perhaps the true state of one's being (the construct that is one's mind) that somehow got dislodged, which when it found itself outside the mind, didn't know quite what to do about it.

One of my most cherished books in my library. This book is easy to misunderstand, in its intent and its revelation. I cannot even claim any authoritative knowledge, so this is only an interpretation.I think that the history of horrible and sadistic abuse at the hands of his father and the fact that his elder brother became mentally ill as well and then committed suicided only overshadows the importance of Schreber's experience and message. Knowing his history allows the reader to be dismissive about the authenticity of his experience. And that is exactly what one should not do.What should strike the reader is how "sane" Schreber comes across as with the rational, almost objective and detached, and lucid way he writes about his illness and experience in the book. He is most definitely in control of his cognitive functions and he proves this to be the case by being freed from institutionalization and returning to the bench. That said, he is still utterly convinced of the truth of his experience, and while able to function quite normally, he refuses to see his experience as delusional, that is, he still believes in the authenticity of his experience and his religious and metaphysical claims. It was this point that intrigued me the most. Now, if you were to be institutionalized for paranoid delusions, you would not be released if you maintained that your delusions were real and not delusions (at least, the doctors would not recommend you leaving even if you checked in voluntarily). How is the reader to take the paradox that Schreber presents: is he truly mentally fit by the end of the book or is he still ill due to his insistence upon the reality of his delusions? It is this problem that should make the reader begin to take Schreber more seriously and allow them to analyze the philosophy in his experience instead of glossing over it as sick fantasy. Or should we take Schreber seriously? In analyzing the world view in his memoirs I would say we should give him a charitable reading.Because of my conviction, I think of this book as more of a work of philosophy, specifically metaphysics, than the writings of a madman. While this memoir is an insightful look into the mental constructs of a paranoid schizophrenic it holds much more in its pages that needs to be accounted for. It is well known that schizophrenics have a tendency towards entertaining, as well as acting upon, strange religious constructs of their own mind (modulo the question why, that is for the psychotherapist to answer) but a treatment of Schreber's highly developed and thorough system would not be a waste of time and should be taken up.Here are some particulars that come to mind: his incorporation of a misunderstood zoroastrianism, his developed cosmology/cosmogony that includes a concern of extraterrestrial states of the universe, his preoccupation with evil and redemption, concern over the state of affairs of reality versus his own, an insistence on his own existential import in abrogating any danger to others, an equal insistence on non-violence even when he thought his person to be under threat, a peculiar ontology that admits immaterial objects as having substance, a philosophy of mind that gives explanatory power to a theory on the mind-body problem, and etc.I say all this in order to put forth the idea that had Schreber not been a schizophrenic, his metaphysics would, or at least parts of it should, be taken serious from a philosophical standpoint. Instead we have clinicians giving theories on why he had such delusions rather than countenancing the importance or non-importance of them philosophically. If you want to chalk up his memoirs as just a horrible experience of a madman and not a carefully thought out system, then you can. But, you will have to give some account for the fact that when he fashioned the book for publication it was according to a thematic (not chronological, but instead analytic) system by a man in control of his cognitive abilities. And, you will also need to give an account of how a madman was cognitively able to write such an accomplishment when no schizophrenic since has been able to do the same.Regardless of my own convictions in why you should read the book (philosophy aside), this book is ultimately a sublime treatise on the perseverance of the human spirit. Despite the sometimes horrific experiences that Schreber relates (this book is not for the timid of heart), he is always positive and upbeat in his telling. The fact that he is convinced that he will get through it is uplifting; and even though he was re-institutionalized for the remainder of his life after the death of his wife eight years later, his indomitable spirit of hope for himself and mankind leaves the reader challenged to do the same in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

An extraordinary account by Daniel Paul Schreber of his breakdown, his "hallucinations", his journey. A classic book in psychiatry. It is thrilling. So many of the terms he uses vibrate with us today: soul murder, nerve rays, his connection with God which involves both control and surrender, the way his hallucinations enabled him to act out being a woman in sexual intercourse (something he thought about just before he went mad). Freud spoke of hallucinations as restoring lost objects. Schreber spoke of a blackout in which the world (and self) were destroyed, then "miracled up" (his term) again in a new key. Freud's writings on Schreber (based on Schreber's memoir) are a must too. The two together make one of the most thrillng trips through a mad dimension that is relevant for every human being. I write of both Schreber and Freud from a contemporary viewpoint in my chapter on Schreber in The Psychotic Core. Right now I happen to be thinking of Phillip K Dick - the words that most appear in a word count of his writings were psychosis and schizophrenia. I don't know if he read Schreber or Freud's account of Schreber - but he would have loved them.Michael EigenAuthor, Flames from the Unconscious

My 10 year old reads and re-reads it, then comes to me to discuss what she finds. The book has good information, and it covers topics I had not thought to discuss with her. A great addition to our library, even though we are close and I'm a teacher. It always helps to have an extra resource when you are parenting through adolescence!

This is a amazing book for preteens. 10 year old daughter read it all with no hassles. She started talking to me about stuff in the book that is going on with her body.

I ordered this book for my eleven year old granddaughter, to make the conversation about the changes she should expect a little easier. It just arrived this weekend so it’s too soon to say much about it. However, I reviewed the chapter headings before I ordered the book and it appears to me that it covers all of the most important topics. She and her mother will be reading the book together.

I got this book for my 9 year old and I’m glad that I read through it prior to giving it to her. My 9 year old doesn’t need to be concerned with shaving her legs or dating right now. Seems like the suggested age range is off a bit. I’m putting this book in a drawer for a couple of years.

My daughter loves this book. It’s full of information but not too much.If you’re looking to help your daughter understand how her body grows and changes and a good introduction to talking about difficult subjects, this is a great start.

I love this book so much. It is so helpful. My daughter looks forward to our time together to discuss her changing body and what to expect. We love it!

We are still reading it, but so far (more than half way) it is a good additional source for young girls/tweens. I say additional source because it has brought up additional questions and conversations, but I believe those important questions and conversations need to be answered by a trusted, loving source (ie. parent, auntie, grandma, special family friends, etc).

My 8 year old daughter loves reading this at night and we talk a lot about girl stuff now thanks to the honest nature of this book.

Since generating and allocating resources are major challenges for all executive directors, this insightful book helps me understand the "Goldilocks Challenge" for evidence systems - how much is enough and when to prioritize in our program cycles...Good blend of theory and case studies. Definitely get to know their CART model (Credible, Actionable, Responsible, Transportable) It can be a quick read or an intensely highlighted reference resource - I'll recommend to other but will be keeping my copy with my notes!

This book lays out critical terminology, trends, and what one needs to consider when conducting research on social impact initiatives. As one who has worked in international development and research, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Many thanks to the authors for a 21st century framework--CART principles for data collection and "right-fit evidence"--that will surely prove to be a classic! Professors in international development, please put this book on your syllabus.

This is the second book I've read by Mary Lawson but it won't be my last. Her writing style is one of depth and profundity. Her characterizations run true to life and I felt like I was in Struan, Canada among the book's characters.Like 'Crow Lake', this book takes place on a farm in rural northern Canada. The protagonists are the Dunn family, especially Arthur and Jake, two brothers who could not be more different. Jake is a dilettante, a man who is without empathy or conscience, living his life impulsively and for the moment. He is good-looking and his mother's favorite. Arthur, the older of the two, is serious and streadfast, a hard worker and a man of few words but deep emotions. It is Arthur that helps his father keep the farm going. When they are boys, Jake is involved in a serious accident that Arthur blames himself for. Though he saves Jake's life, Arthur wishes, at the time, that Jake would die. Arthur carries this guilt with him like an albatross onto adulthood. As the novel opens Arthur is married to the beautiful Laura and Jake is nowhere in the picture.Ian, the son of Struan's physician, asks Arthur for a summer job because he is smitten with Laura, Arthur's beautiful wife. Ian turns out to be a good worker and a special relationship develops between Ian and the Dunn family. This is a novel that explores the depths of human feelings, the sources of guilt and hope, while at the same time examining the every day workings of one family during the time prior to and after World War II. The novel switches back and forth between the 1930's and 1940's to the 1960's and the reader is slowly privy to the Dunn family history and experiences. There is not one slow page in this novel. It is heartrending, profound, and deep - nothing really lightweight about it except for Ian's fishing for the big one that got away. If you like well-developed characterization, drama, and angst, pick up this book and enjoy.

I have now read the "Struan Trilogy". I've enjoyed each. Lawson has grown on me. At first I was looking for a a bit more plot but I in each of these there is plenty of conflict and surprise but fortunately there is no cheap shock value. The characters are neither cliches or stretched beyond their environment. I really liked this story. The two brothers are quite different. We learn so much about them. Lawson is neither in a rush or dilatory in telling us a country story from mid Century rural Ontario that has both local qualities and universal life lessons. The focus is on the characters. They are appealing in their humanness and in her language. The plot revolves around growing up with both happiness and loss. Overlaying the brothers' story is the local doctor and his son equally engaging in how they should deal with life and the challenges of alienation and the attraction of staying in a small community or going to a bigger place (maybe Toronto).I would recommend all of Lawson's stories. In each one the characters from other stories float in gently making the town feel more like home for the reader with each page.

Having recently read Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, I immediately purchased two more of her books. I'm impressed with the honesty and integrity with which this author weaves another earthy, gritty and realistic look at family relationships and friendship. Having grown up in a rural area, I could relate to the plights of farmers and the challenges they endured. This author has done her research and shared the hardships and family dynamics of rural life with credibility. Generations build upon one another in this haunting tale of the human condition. There is incredible depth throughout this compelling story of dysfunctional families, sibling rivalry, friendships, jealousy and so much more. The description of the Canadian countryside is pictorial and vivid through Lawson's imagery. The characters portrayed are convincing and plausible.I highly recommend The Other Side of the Bridge! It's a book that you won't want to put down. It will tug at your heartstrings and open your mind to a time in history that was oppressive for many.

Usually when you describe a book as 'riveting' it's a thriller about spies or murder mysteries. Mary Lawson's THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE is neither, but it is as riveting a read as I've run across in quite a while. I bought the book because I'd so enjoyed her first novel CROW LAKE, which was simply superb. (I use that phrase, 'simply superb,' whenever I really like a book. So, sorry if you've seen it before, but it fits.) Well so is this one; in fact it might even be a bit better than her first. I kept thinking of Cain and Abel, or Essau and Jacob, but neither biblical parallel rally quite fits. Because Arthur and Jake are unique characters, and I know I won't soon forget them. And then there is Laura too, a beautifully drawn character, who also acts as a catalyst, who creates all that tension. And Ian, who is witness to everything and, later, participant. And I'm telling you right now, when you get down to those final pages, you will be wincing, because you've gotten to know these characters, and you just know there will be pain, there will be hurt, there will be - there IS - real genuine tragedy. And yet Lawson gives you some comfort in the epilogue. This is a story, set against the war years in Canada and also 10-15 years after the war. It plays like Greek tragedy, RIVETING Greek tragedy. Mary Lawson is a great writer. I'll be watching for her next book.- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER
