This was a supplementary text for a math physics course I had taken years ago. It was entirely on complex analysis. The main text was Copson which like Whittaker and Watson emphasized power series methods as it was also one of the early British texts. In truth Copson seemed more of an outline as complete proofs many times were relegated to references. Whittaker and Watson began with basic real analysis-Dedekind L and R sections, theory of convergence, uniform convergence, sequence and series convergence, Riemann integration, then complex numbers, Argand diagrams and after this development you're eased into complex analysis proper. The development is rigorous as necessary proofs are given along the way. It's not easy as the notation is antiquated. Metric topological ideas and notation made later texts easier to understand and more systematic. For example I did a review on Anthony Zee's text on quantum field theory here on Amazon and outlined performance of a sample contour integral. I needed to justify an inequality to show an arc integral goes to zero at infinity. It follows since sine is a convex function. This notion isn't in this text nor in Copson. Whittaker and Watson does use this inequality in their proof of Jordan's lemma on p. 115 in the residue chapter. They justify with a mean value theorem argument, sin(x)/x is decreasing since its derivative is negative on zero to pi/2 so it's between 2/pi and 1. Copson just suggests drawing the graphs. Anyway the convexity argument though involving similar ideas is structured in a more comprehensible way. The notation is old but still understandable. Here and there phrasing is a little unclear, e.g., on p.53 in the modified Heine-Borel theorem section, CD is referred to as a straight line when they mean a closed interval. This is forgiveable as there's a massive amount of information in this text. Even in the 2nd edition of Jackson, this text is referred to as maintaining full mathematical rigor and is suggested as a mathematical physics reference. It does do the 2nd order linear partial differential equations of mathematical physics like Laplace, heat and wave equations with solutions. It doesn't go as far as classification into parabolic or hyperbolic, pretty much just ones that will have transcendental functions as solutions. To these functions is devoted a great deal of the text.There is material in the text that is difficult to ferret out elsewhere for instance on pp.141-142 of chapter 7, the Borel integral is proven as a formula to do an analytic continuation. Borel summation is also treated. These are used in recovering a Minkowski space integral from a Euclidean integral in Feynman path integration. The following chapter on asymptotic expansions and summable series has material that bears on renormalization, though it's hard to see -they (physicists) jump fast and operate on faith it seems. As it's my habit to at least give a tidbit from the text, I choose a necessary part of the proof of analytic continuation by Borel integral that I just mentioned-it only involves high school geometry, pretty and simple. This is at the bottom footnote of p. 141. Here's the lead up. We start with a circle of radius r where the function is analytic within circle. Next we draw lines from the center of the circle to each of the singularities in the plane. Next draw the perpendicular to the line through the singularity at the singularity for each of them. These perpendiculars form a polygon surrounding the circle. Next take any point P within the polygon and form a circle with OP as diameter where O is the center of our original circle of analyticity. There can be no singularity on or within this circle on OP. Why? Any inscribed angle with O and P as endpoints has vertex or inscribed angle of 90 degrees since OP cuts 180 degrees. If there's a singularity on the circle-P must be on a side of the polygon. If there's a singularity inside the circle, extend the line from O to the singularity till it intersects the circle and draw the line from this point to P (it's perpendicular of course). By our original construction there's a perpendicular through the singularity which we see is parallel to that line through P. This puts P outside the polygon contrary to original choice-it's on a line parallel to a side of the polygon and outside it. The polygon is convex of course by the way we constructed it from the circle-it's the intersection of convex sets, half-planes, and we've just shown P to lie in the complement of one of these half-planes,i.e., P is definitely outside. Next you do analysis proper. Weren't these guys great? Some pages may be partly cut off or even missing in your copy but there are free PDF's available online if you need to remedy or copy. Still giving it a 5 for content and for making it available again. There was a text by G.N.Watson titled "Complex Integration and Cauchy's Theorem" meant to supplement this text. It gives rigorous proofs of the Jordan Curve Theorem and in depth treatment of branch points and the related notion of winding numbers. You'll recognize ideas used here as being topological like homotopy. This text makes rigorous ideas that needed to be assumed in Whittaker and Watson. These ideas were new at the time. This text is available again by Forgotten Books. A modern text which puts some emphasis on power series methods is the one by Serge Lang.P.S. You'll find two exercises on contour integration at the end of the chapter on Riemann's Zeta function (p.280 in mine) which constitute the main parts of Hardy's Theorem on its zeroes on the critical line. These effectively prove the theorem. Later results on the stubborn Riemann Hypothesis have really hinged on sharpening Hardy's arguments. I guess though Whittaker and Watson is old its ideas put forth in the development of complex analysis are still current.

The Course of Modern Analysis has much theory with formulae, but it should be use only as a reference book and not for a formal course. The derivations of the formulae are incomplete in most cases with many steps left out which make it difficult to follow. Some formulae do not have derivation but are left for to user to work out. I have used this book as reference, and I appreciate its availability. .

Whittaker & Watson is one of the most important books on analysis. Every mathematician should read it.However, it was written over a hundred years ago and there is, at the time of this writing, no public domain digitalization of the text. So instead this printing features has scans of the original work. The text is therefore smudgy and the font is too small. The result is that this printing is hard to read without a magnifier. At best, its only marginally better than reading the scan on a tablet. Some pages even have letters cropped out!

This volume is divided into 2 parts. Part I is titled The Processes of Analysis, and part II is titled The Trancendental Functions. The topics covered in the first part are standard and offer preparation for the Second Part.More modern Analysis Texts do not offer as much content on Special Functions as is presented in Part II. Much modern treatment of the functions covered in Part II seems to have been relocated to Mathematical Physics.This volume is a worthy addition to a library as a reference work for transcendental functions. The title Modern must be related to the time of publication, not today.

This book streamed the modern developments in complex analysis and its relevant areas such as complex differential equation and elliptic functions. The notions are described in a very clear way which should be a good guide for the beginners!

I am still reading this book, and I imagine it will take longer to do so than Amazon cares to wait. I really enjoy the nitty-gritty of infinite series and references to the greats at the end of the nineteenth century as they developed the concepts of converence. I would imagine that a math student taking a course in analysis would profit by reading it, along with people who need to know about special functions.

I've been enjoying the anime, so I figured I'd try the book. In the end, I have mixed feelings.- The good:The characters are endearing, the plot is dark and intriguing, and the physical book itself is absolutely GORGEOUS. Lovely artwork.- The not so good:The writing itself is unfortunately a bit lackluster. I don't know if the problem lies with the author, the translator, or both, but the writing in general simply feels amateurish and unpolished. I realize that most readers don't get hung up on stylistic issues like I do, but poor writing can really ruin an otherwise great story for me. There are a number of "Japanese-isms" that seem clumsily translated, and a lot of the "clues" to the mystery are more or less shoved unsubtly in your face. There are also a shocking number of typos and misused words.- Overall:I'd give 3 and a half stars, but since I can't, I'll say 4 out of 5. The story and characters are entertaining enough to keep me reading despite the unimpressive writing -- and to honest, reading a translation with my hyper-critical English-major eye is probably a little unfair!

The front cover suggests Sherlock Holmes, with a young golden-haired girl filling Holmes' role. The book delivers.First, read all of the product reviews. My review of the reviews shows that each misses one or two things about the book. All-together they cover the book well. Also see [...]'Gosick 1' is definitely a Young Adults fiction. Quite a bit of it is cartoonish, such as the adult police detective Grevil de Blois, and his two assistants. The situations strain probability, eventually coming across more "wow." than "what?"Victorique seems to live in the library of Saint Marguerite Academy (typo in the novel; it should be Sainte) Kazuya is a foreign student at the academy who has come to know Victorique. His righteous indignation at a slight done to Victorique gets both of them a holiday at the coast, and Victorique's curiosity then gets both of them deep into a mystery, with danger that they won't survive the night.Having finished it, would I read another? I can think of a half-dozen books by other authors that I would want to read first. When I get around to wanting to read another book of this set I think I am more interested in 'Gosicks 1', a short story collection set before 'Gosick 1', before wanting to read 'Gosick 2', the next logical novel in the series.

This light novel is one of my favorites ones. It is not heavy as other out there with suspense and detective-ish but it does the job. I recommend it especially if you have watched the anime.One downside is that the translator of this book had a s***ty as editor since i spotted many English words errors. Many.

This was the first light novel that I have ever read. This novel is a little different compare to the manga but most of it is the same. I really don't read novels but this kept me reading the whole thing in less than a day. Great novel.

When the young girl's investigative nature leads her to a cruise ship that matches the description of one of the school's local ghost stories, the two find themselves caught up in a life and death race against time that promises to pit their intellect against an unknown killer. Trapped at sea, the two discover a terrifying clue. This isn't the first time this has happened.If there was any worry that the mystery genre was too hard for the YA market, lay it aside now.GOSICK, in a word, is stunning. More than that, it's terrifyingly gripping.Never failing to miss a mark, the story flows from one page to the next without pause or hesitation. Excellently written prose, unbearably suspenseful pacing and three dimensional characters that feel real enough to touch fill the pages of this beautifully illustrated novel.If Sherlock Holmes had a literary daughter, it would be the doll faced Victorique without any doubt. Capturing the mood and essence of the mystery classic, GOSICK gives new life to the old archetype stories that have still continued to entertain many today while managing to weave in its own special and unique touch.The decision of the author to base the story in the 1920's after World War I was genius. Not only does it enhance the setting of the story and prove more interesting, it dramatically changes the mood of the locations and the way in which children are treated.As with any mystery, the ending is perhaps the most important aspect of the book besides the story itself and I'm happy to report that not only does GOSICK have near perfect pacing, it also has a near flawless twist of an ending. Readers hoping to be surprised will not leave disappointed.In conclusion, there is almost nothing I can say negative about this book other than the fact that it ends. A great inclusive overview of women's history. I plan to use it as a key text in a program for high school seniors.

I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley.actual rating: 3.5I just want to point out that calling this a 'graphic history' and 'highly illustrated' is more than a bit misleading. It's just a prose book with some black and white line drawings thrown in every so often. I guess the illustrations are of decent quality for something like a webcomic, but I was expecting a lot more out of it based on the description. This doesn't necessarily affect my review because the book was still good, it was just good in a different way than it was marketed. Which actually kind of brings me to my next point ...Again, I am not complaining about this because I feel like it was very well done, but this book was almost as much about race equality as it was about women's equality. Obviously the two are very connected in our nations' history, but I was a bit surprised that the book spent so much time on slavery and the civil rights movement - in regards to black men AND women. There were a lot of very interesting facts included because of this, but I feel like something along the lines of 'a comprehensive look at the history of the relation between race and gender equality in the united states' might have been a better title just because so much time is spent talking about it.The last few chapters I feel got stuck in a bit of a rut as well in regards to Hilary Clinton. Obviously Hilary has been a big player in politics and women's progress in that arena in the last 30+ years, but to basically spend the majority of three chapters talking about one woman is maybe not the best use of space in a book that is supposed to cover such a broad topic. What happened in 2016 was absolutely devastating but there have been so many amazing female politicians elected to both the House and the Senate in the 2016 and 2018 elections and I think it would have been great to mention some of them and how we are still trying to move forward despite setbacks.Overall it was a fairly comprehensive and informative read. It's pretty depressing how much further we still have to go, but hearing about the achievements of all the great women who came before us is very inspiring. I would recommend this book, but just keep in mind that what you get is not necessarily what it is marketed as.

This was a good basic overview of the history of feminism in America - not an in-depth exploration, to be sure, but a nice jumping off point for people who are new to this, and a good place to find out the names of people and movements to research more. However, this book is NOT a "graphic history" - it's a book of text with occasional line-drawing illustrations sprinkled in. I went into this expecting a graphic novel (a la John Lewis' "March" or Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis") and was a little disappointed.

This is a great book that covers basic facts of the history of women's rights in the US . It is full of fascinating tid bits of information that make the reader want to learn more about each of the subjects covered. This is not a comic book or graphic novel style book but a generously illustrated history with plenty of facts for an adult reader but enough pictures to to also appeal to younger readers. This is not a children's book but I would recommend it for any home or classroom with young curious minds. I can easily picture families reading this together and further exploring the topics covered on line or through other history resources. Ms. Deaderick clearly has done her research and this book is packed with new (to me) information about historical figures that I thought I already knew all about. Great book for any home, classroom or library collection.

Fr. Peter Mitchell accomplished a coup of his own with this revealing study of the events of 1967 - 69 at the Catholic University of America. THE COUP AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY answers the question many American Catholics have asked themselves ever since: "What happened to Catholic Higher Education in America?"Late in the 1967 school year, Archbishop Patrick O''Boyle, chancellor of the University, had initiated an action to "not renew" the contract to employ theology professor, Father Charles Curran, due to the young priest's problematic teachings on sexual matters. Fr. Curran, instead of going quietly, protested the "dismissal"--along with many of his confreres in the university's School of Theology. The chancellor and bishops on the board of trustees relied upon the Church and the Magisterium as their authority for their actions; while Curran and the School of Theology appealed to the "total academic freedom" encapsulated in the norms of the American Association of University Professors, which the University had recently subscribed to in order to elevate its standing in American academia. The board attempted to keep the situation low-key until resolved; however, Fr. Curran and the School of Theology staged a university-wide strike of both students and faculty of every Department within Catholic U.--with the exception of the School of Education, led by the courageous dean, Monsignor Eugene A. Kevane.The young, charismatic Fr. Curran became the darling of the media during the boycott. Within a week, due largely to the firestorm created by the media, the Board of Trustees caved. Not only did they re-instate Fr. Curran, they also gave him tenure...an action they would regret when, a little over a year later, Fr. Curran and over 400 theologians signed an open "Statement of Dissent" against Pope Paul IV's encyclical, Humanae Vitae.Now the Board's earlier capitulation to the principles of "Academic Freedom" over fealty to the Magisterium led to dire consequences. Although a few brave souls struggled valiantly, the Board of Trustees was too fractured to approve a strong response. Dean Kevane had put his finger on the problem when he contended that the issue was "Who would hold the reins of power in the University: the Magisterium or the American Association of University Professors?" Sadly, by default, the latter's principles prevailed and Msgr. Eugene Kevane was forced out of his position as Dean of the School of Education. Apparently, dissent was completely acceptable--except for those who dared dissent against the dissenters. Once the premiere Catholic university of the United States had "gone liberal," many other Catholic colleges and universities followed suite. Fr. Curran maintained his post as a tenured professor of Theology at CUA until 1986, when, under Pope John Paul II, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith declared that Curran was not eligible to be a teacher of Catholic theology.THE COUP AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY is masterfully written, well researched, and extensively documented. "The Coup at Catholic University" is one of the newest and strongest weapons that can be brought to bear in the new evangelization. The book explains the reasoning behind the opposition to Catholic discipline proclaimed and acted on by those Catholic politicians who proudly put themselves forward as more Catholic than the Pope, by those Catholic politicians who publicly oppose definitive Catholic moral doctrines (and canons), and by those Catholic politicians who stridently declare that they would never let religious authority stand in the way of their doing "the right thing." This is a fascinating story of how Catholic University was torn over whether Father Charles Curran should be dismissed from teaching theology because of his support for birth control and a more liberal view of sexuality than taught by the Roman Catholic Church. The Curran controversy transformed Catholic universities around the country. This is the story of how the change began. For anyone interested in the state of the American Catholic Church, this book is a must read.

I really loved this book. It took me less than 3 days to finish and it was really hard to put down. As a devout Catholic who grew up in the 80's I saw the direct effect of the theologians trying to make themselves the teacher of the faith. This book had my blood boiling, not because I disagreed with it, but simply because I hated how the bishops in charge of the university allowed the sheep to lead the flock. It doesn't make any sense to me that the "Catholic University of America", would in just a few years give in the secularized mentality that is ruining our country today. I pray that our current church leaders stand up for the faith handed down to us by Jesus Christ with no compromise or fear. This book was very well written and informative. If you're interested in how our Catholic universities became secularized then this is the book for you.

Avery accurate account of how moral relativism triumphed and led to the death of a great university. I lived through that period. I relived it when I read this. An excellent book and recommended for people of faith.

An amazingly well-written story of the happenings at Catholic University of America between 1967 and 1971 that contributed to the significant decline in Catholic identity within Catholic higher education in the United States.
