Gayle MacDonald: M.S., L.M.T., began her career as a teacher in 1973 and as a massage therapist in 1989. In 1991, she blended her two career paths. Since 1994, she has given massage to cancer patients and supervised massage therapists on the oncology units of Oregon Health and Science University. MacDonald is a frequent contributor to the three main massage journals in the US. Presently, she travels the US teaching continuing education courses in oncology massage.

This is the definitive text, IMHO, for all issues concerning the pairing of cancer and massage therapy. The industry term is "oncology massage", but this book deals with so much more than those two words imply. For starters, "oncology" is used to describe any client who has, is being treated for, or has ever had cancer. And "massage" refers to a variety of bodywork modalities. This book is exhaustive in its thoroughness, but it's also very interesting and easy to read. I also like the personal testimonies of massage therapists who have chosen to work with cancer patients and survivors.

I am a Licensed Massage Therapist, I purchased this book for an Intro to Oncology Massage class I was taking. This book is great, it breaks down the topics you deal with in Oncology Massage is to easily digestible chapters. I found it to be very informative and easy to follow. There are personal stories from other therapists included which I enjoyed reading. I have already gone back to this book multiple times when Oncology related questions have arose. If you are interested in getting into Oncology Massage this would be a good book to look through to see what to expect. If you are already a practicing provider it is a great resource to have on your shelf.

Not crazy about this book. Did not find the information very useful..kind of a rehash. Last chapter re caregivers was the best.

Good information put together in an interesting and thoughtful manner.This book has the potential to rearrange your thoughts and emotions regarding massage work. It is different than school taught us; this is caring and massage at its best.

Gayle's book is by my side as I massage clients with cancer diagnosis in hospital, hospice,and palliative care. It's in my massage office and goes "on the road" with me when I make home visits. This is the "go to" oncology massage resource for Massage Therapists at Wellspring Journey Project.

Good guide, easy to understand.

Good reference book.

This book is invaluable! I am just getting into Oncology Massage and have already referred to this book numerous times. I also took Gayle MacDonald's class "Massage for People Living with Cancer". Her teaching/instruction go hand and hand with the text book. I will admit, I also purchased a medical dictionary to help understand the terminology.

About the Author

Timothy Snyder is the Housum Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He received his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1997, where he was a British Marshall Scholar. Before joining the faculty at Yale in 2001, he held fellowships in Paris, Vienna, and Warsaw, and an Academy Scholarship at Harvard. He has spent some ten years in Europe, and speaks five and reads ten European languages. Among his publications are several award-winning books, all of which have been translated: Nationalism, Marxism, and Modern Central Europe: A Biography of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz (1998, revised edition 2016); The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999 (2003); Sketches from a Secret War: A Polish Artist's Mission to Liberate Soviet Ukraine (2005); The Red Prince: The Secret Lives of a Habsburg Archduke (2008); On Tyranny (2017); and The Road to Unfreedom (2018). I'm glad I didn't skip this one.The author defines the Bloodlands as the lands between pre-war Nazi Germany and the western edge of the Russian Republic, predominantly Poland, Belarus, the Baltic States and Ukraine. I was unaware this book would not focus on the military action(s) and instead focus on the ordinary citizens in these areas as I had not read any reviews prior to starting this book. I have to say, this is one of the best books I've read in quite some time, and the fact it covers a subject I've avoided has opened my mind to wanting to learn more.The author recounts how first Stalin and then Hitler undertook various programs/campaigns against the Polish, Belorussian, Ukrainian and Baltic populaces, as well as against those of the Jewish faith. In a combined campaign of extermination, over 14 million people were killed essentially because of where they lived, what religion they practiced, or if for some reason they were viewed as a threat. Along the way, author Snyder does a really good job of explaining the rationale behind the murderous schemes of Stalin and Hitler and how they fit into the grand plans/ideals of the Nazis and the Soviet Union. Along the way, the reader will encounter multiple personal vignettes about those who there, many of whom did not survive. The story is truly horrifying and the sheer numbers staggering, yet Snyder has woven together an excellent narrative which doesn't get bogged down in either horror or numbers. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more the events in the Bloodlands from the late 1920's through the early 1950's--it truly is an excellent read.

“Without history, the memories become private, which today means national; and the numbers become public, which is to say an instrument in the international competition for martyrdom.”One such number is 33,761. That is the number of Jews shot at Babi Yar, near Kiev, in the Ukraine. On numerous occasions throughout this monumental and essential history, Timothy Snyder uses very precise figures such as 33,761. Admittedly, it rubbed me the wrong way, since in the world of much uncertainty, as Heisenberg and others have proclaimed, it is impossible to know such a number, with that type of certainty and precision. But on the very last page of his account, the author, a Yale historian, explained fully why it is so important to use the “odd” number. It is the humanity that is revealed in the “1”, which can be multiplied by a million or more. It is the fragments of the stories of individuals who once had a real name, that have been preserved in diaries, or the memories of others, or simply a departing sentence scratched on a wall.Snyder does also use “round” numbers, as in 14,000,000. That is his estimate of the number of CIVILIAN deaths in an area he defines as the “Bloodlands,” between 1933 and 1945. It is an area that stretches from St. Petersburg in the north, encompasses the entire eastern shore of the Baltic to Danzig, all of Poland, and on, down to the entire Crimea, and touching the Don River in the east. One of the many strengths of this book is the numerous excellent maps set within the narrative. His contributions to our understanding of what happened in that space and time are numerous. Central is his examination of the disparate motives behind these numerous deaths, and to present a “balanced” account, in a world of madness. Snyder starts in the Ukraine, with Stalin’s efforts to collectivize agriculture, which lead to the death, by starvation, of millions. Many others were deported to the “Gulag.” Next there was the “Terror,” in the late ‘30’s, in which Stalin purged many in the leadership ranks of the Soviet Union, with a particular focus on the Poles. In fact, the “Polish Military Organization” was simply invented for the purpose of justifying the terror. Though the Soviet Union promoted an image of their tolerance towards minorities, which many in the West, probably at one time including myself, accepted, with the “you can make an omelet without breaking a few eggs” rationalization, Snyder concludes otherwise, to a stark degree. Next there was the brief period that Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were allies, which, in part, resulted in the partition of Poland between them, and the calculated decimation of the Polish leadership.What more can be said about the Holocaust and the Jews? Actually, quite a lot, I found. Once again, Snyder condemns best in measured, factual analysis. He deals with the “big picture,” and demonstrates how, after the German failure to take Moscow in 1941, that the destruction of European Jewry became a wartime German objective. He names numerous concentration camps I had never heard of, because they were taken by the Red Army. Prior to reading Snyder’s account I was under the impression that the gas chambers had to be constructed because there was some natural “limit” whereby soldiers could not be ordered to shoot and kill unarmed men, woman and children, and be expected to obey. The soldiers themselves would simply rebel and refuse to participate in these heinous crimes. Not so, apparently, as the author documents how so very many were simply shot, including all those at Babi Yar.Amos Oz, the Israeli novelist once proclaimed that “the dead of the Six Day War belong to all of us; the dead of the Lebanese War belong only to their mother’s.” Snyder posits a similar issue concerning a Soviet Ukrainian Jew who had once lived in an area considered to be Poland. She can be claimed by four different national entities; who does she belong to? And to what political purpose today will these entities use her death? And like Bernard Schlick’s principle character in The Reader, who is accused of war crimes, but asks the Judge: “What would you have done?” and receives no reply, Snyder cautions against assuming the identity of the victim, and raises the issue of what people who are just “trying to get by” will do in order to stay alive… including being Jewish policeman in the ghetto.My first efforts to obtain a different vantage point on the Second World War, other than the one I was brought up on, as an American, that is, Pearl Harbor and D-Day, was reading Alexander Werth’s Russia at War: 1941-1945, in the ‘60’s. William Shirer proclaimed it to be “the best book we probably shall ever have in English on Russia at war.” I found it strange therefore that in Snyder’s extensive 37 page bibliography, it is never mentioned. Of course, some of Werth’s information and opinions, as set forth in 1964, are outdated and have been superseded. For example, Werth had left it an open question as to who killed the Polish officers in the Katyn Forest, the Soviets or the Nazis. We now know for certain it was the former, and Snyder details this.I also compared accounts concerning the doomed Warsaw uprising of 1944. I found Snyder’s account less rigorous, with the implicit assumption that the Russians had simply stopped, for no particular reason, and allowed the Poles to be slaughter as a result. Werth seemed to be much more explicit and detailed, clearly condemning “…the awkward questions of the Moscow radio appeals at the end of July to the people of Warsaw to ‘rise’… and the Russian refusal to let supply planes from the West land on Soviet airfields.” Also, it was clearly in Stalin’s interest to allow the Polish elites again to be decimated. Nonetheless, Werth quotes the German general, Heinz Guderian on the inability of the Russians to take Warsaw, cites the failure to cross the Vistula in July, with a loss of 30 Russian tanks, and Werth concludes: “The only conclusion this author, at any rate, has been able to reach is that in August and September, 1944, the available Red Army forces in Poland were genuinely not able to capture Warsaw, which Hitler was determined to hold.” At a minimum, I think Snyder should have at least addressed this issue, and Werth’s knowledge of the matter.Despite the above one flaw, I consider this an essential historical work. 6-stars.

Perhaps it is because I am in my 90th year, but I cannot believe many Americans have any idea how gigantic was the slaughter of innocent men, women, and children (yes, even babies) under the Stalin and Hitler regimes. This book tells all, with gory details galore. I have visited several of the Nazi death camps. Nevertheless I had no idea (until I read this book) how awful was the carnage between 1920 and 1945 in Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany, and other places.

After the first chapter I began implementing some of the ideas with my six year old. The impact was swift and clear. He went from saying what a horrible bad kid he was, and how awful his summer was, to saying that he is doing well and what a great summer he has had! I have finished the book but haven't yet implemented everything. We will continue to work on it, but I really feel like I've finally found a possible solution for the extreme negative self esteem he's been struggling with!

This book has some very helpful approaches for dealing with your "difficult child", but it's needlessly wordy. I feel like it could have conveyed the same information in 40-50 pages of plain language and saved busy parents from wading through quite so many academic discussions.

The information in this book has made a big difference in our household. Our "Difficult Child" just turned 13 years old and I was concerned that the techniques might be too young for her. They are not. A child of almost any age would benefit from the approach of improving their self-esteem and of having parents who have learned to keep their cool. Great ideas and great book overall.

This book really helps parents make a mental shift in the way they parent. From no longer focusing on the negative and instead promoting positive behavior in even the most difficult behaving children with ODD/ADHD/ADD diagnoses. I use this book to help teach parents a different approach instead of expecting me to “fix” their child in therapy. Working with the child and the parent makes for a much more peaceful partnership at home!

I am now on chapter 9 of this book. The methods seem effective. However it's hard to read. I feel most of these 15 page chapters could have been summed up in 3 paragraphs or less. So to me I had to force myself to read the same thing over and over again an entire chapter

I can't say enough good things about this book. It has really made both me and my husband adjust the way we approach parenting our super intelligent, high energy boy. Thank you so much to the caring authors for creating this family dynamic altering book.

The advice in this book helped me to better understand my son. I have read 5 other books and tried implementing their plan....which didnt work for my son. I am so grateful for this book, such a different way of thinking and turning the downward spiral around! Wonderful! I am grateful!

This is the only parenting book, of dozens read, that helped with my kids at all. It helped when they were little and it still helps in middle school. The concepts are simple and the results are good. With two very challenging boys, it’s a constant struggle to stay positive and calm. I have one who is a born manipulator and one with organic brain damage. They both respond well to this approach and over time have become, dare I say, compliant?!?!?!

I wrote this book to offer readers an easy to use guide to learn stand up paddling. Â When I started paddling SUPs in 2007, there was no instruction available in my area and few friends had any idea how paddle the boards. Â As stated in my book, my first experience was on a tippy board too narrow for my 6'-5" frame, so I couldn't stand up, and even thought it wasn't for me. Â In time, I was able to try wider more stable board and immediately stood up and was hooked. Â It's fun to know that with one SUP board, you can run a river, do an overnight trip, go surfing, catch a few fish, race, spin in circles in a whirlpool of a tidal rapid, paddle casually on flat water, and even surf thousands of miles from the ocean. Â With a background in sea and surf kayaking, I quickly adapted many kayak strokes such as sweep strokes, the stern/tail, bow/nose rudder, and the use of edging to turn the board. Â I've had fun since learning to master new skills such as the pivot turn and the cross bow turn for quick directional control. Â Since my first day on the water, the SUP community in my area has grown considerably with year round races, surfing contests, and I've met many new friends. Â Every day I get on the water, I learn a new skill or see a fresh perspective. Â I hope this book is useful and you find your own stoke as I did. Â

This book is an excellent reference and resource for entry level through advanced paddlers. The content is to the point and the author has left out the fluff found in some of the other texts. Mastery of the techniques described will take years and I know very few advanced paddlers who would not agree they need to refresh themselves on the skills described. While some more pictures would be helpful I have found simply spending time on the water practicing has answered the questions I had during reading. If you are interested in or serious about paddling this book needs to be part of your equipment.

I found this book to be very informative. Being a surfer who picked up stand up paddling as a way to spend more time on the water, my technique with a paddle probably leaves something to be desired. While it one on one instruction is best, I now feel informed enough to really start working on my paddling efficiency. This book has a ton of great pointers for paddling and turning technique, as well as equipment to bring and different aspects of SUPing. There are definitely parts of this book that will be getting reread from time to time just as refreshers and I will be loaning out my copy of the book to my friends that have expressed an interest in the sport. This book is to SUP what Freedom of the Hills is to mountaineering.

I've been paddling for a little over a year, but was entirely self-taught. This book showed me some of the negative habits I had picked up and finally I know how to properly execute a stroke. Very well written and informative!

good book, lots of information. I was hoping for more help for complete beginners with regard to paddle strokes and where to stand on the board and what effect these things have on the board.

Nothing flashy here, just great resource of information and knowledge that everyone needs to begin and get started on SUP. Great Book for the Beginner looking to get into the sport, or an intermediate to expert on one area of the sport looking to expand their horizons and take up a new challenge whether it be in the Surf, river, racing, long distance expedition type paddling. Rob Casey's "STAND UP PADDLING, Flatwater to surf and rivers" book has it all for you at a very resonable price!

Good Beginner SUP Book, pretty much everything you need to know with a good amount of pictures. Also gets into surfing. Well worth the low price
