I first saw Jerry Uelsmann's work in the sixties when we were stranded in a Chicago Airport by a snowstorm, waiting for the same commuter plane. He was in his late twenties then and carrying a portfolio of his work. As we talked, he shared it with me. I knew I was in the presence of artistic genius immediately. Already, I discovered, he was well known in the art work with major exhibits in known galleries. Not only did the content of his montages excite me but, but, being an amateur darkroom photographer at the time, I had some vague sense of the skill involved in his final productions. We were friends for a number of years and lost touch, but I've kept up with his work because I still admire it so deeply. This book is a treasure and I recognize some montages from the sixties in it, as well. Jerry is not only creative, but he's an interesting lecturer and funny, besides. The child in him will never die. I suspect that's one big reason he's so good. I would highly recommend any of his books, and this is one!

As someone who shoots on film and works in the darkroom, I can not recommend this artist enough. If you want to know how he accomplishes this his work then read Uelsmann: Process and Perception

There are not many photographers working today who can be said to have truly had an influence on the history of the photographic medium. Jerry Uelsmann is one of the rare photographers whose work is not only visually exciting and provocative but is also thoughtful. This gorgeously printed book has some of his best known early works and many wonderful new images that are a testament to his continued creativity and love of the possibilities inherent in the medium of photography. "Other Realities" is an excellent addition to my library and it just doesn't get any better than this.

I am so glad that I found this book. The quality of work is great. There are so many different types of imagery. I really enjoy this book. Everyone that comes over has to look at it.

Wonderful collection superbly printed.

very good

this is a very nice book for the money, for those interested in unusual photography

All of Uelsmann's books reflect a poetic irrationalism, and this book is no exception. The images evoke a strange and surreal eloquence. Technically, like all of his work, the prints are tonally rich even as reproductions. There are numurous photgraphers who currently utilize digital tools in the creation of similar collage/montage work, yet they rarely achieve the same formal elegance as Uelsmann - and he has been doing this for years - long before Adobe Photophop became a tool in the photographers arsenal. He's the photgraphic collage master - Version 1.0.

The sweet sounds of Soul make it easy to imagine an American South that, perhaps, never existed, where the music had folk dancing across color lines. Those lines remain intact in this exhaustively researched and provocative book. In it, Charles L. Hughes celebrates the most American of American music and the genius of musicians who may not have changed the world, but certainly made the world a better-sounding place.--Mark Anthony Neal, author Soul Babies: Black Popular Culture and the Post-Soul Aesthetic With Country Soul, Charles L. Hughes offers a much-needed revisionist history of southern soul and country music, one that takes the music and musicians seriously while remaining critical of both the contemporary racial politics of the music business and the accumulated romanticism of the surrounding scholarship. It's a massive achievement and a gentle ode to the legacy of musicians who built American culture before being tossed out of the history books.--Karl Hagstrom Miller, University of Virginia

This is an extremely interesting book on how soul music was produced by whites and blacks in the South in the '60s. The author has some ideas that vary from those of other similar histories. The only drawback is the sometimes "I'm smarter than those other writers" tone of the book and his occasionally dense academic style. But it's worth the trouble, especially in small doses.

Some reviews have called it preachy but I would say its "teachy". Your impression will probably depend on where your head and heart are at regarding racial and civil rights issues.

Really insightful book - a probably more realistic way of looking at soul music and race. Not as jolly as Peter Guralnick's vision, or Robert Johnson's, but fascinating and likely way closer to the truth. Smart, well-written and eye-opening.

A fabulous book! A must-read for anyone interested in music produced in the "country-soul" triangle (Memphis, Nashville, and Muscle Shoals). Very-well written and thoroughly researched and documented. I couldn't put it down!

I thought this Charles Hughes book was really amazing. Partly that’s because it consistently taught me things about music—country music, soul music, and of course country-soul—that I already thought I knew all about. Just for instance, I knew country music had been incorporating black-associated styles into its sound for as long as there’s been country music, but the chapter on how country music did that once again in the late 70s and early 80s with DISCO was revelatory. That sort of interplay between white and black music, and too white and black musicians and audiences, in what Hughes terms the Country Soul Triangle—Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Nashville—is what this book is about. Often, these interactions manifest in ways that aren’t obvious or that took place behind the scenes—integrated session lineups that migrated from working with white-associated country acts to black musicians and then back again. The cliché is that as the civil rights struggle and racial tensions raged outside of the studios in the 60s and 70s, the black and white musicians inside were experiencing a kind of color blind utopia where the only thing that mattered, man, was the music. Hughes complicates that tremendously, showing 1) how this idyllic session scenario was always a mythic environment where racial conflict, tension, prejudice, exploitation and misunderstanding happened just as intensely as they did and do everywhere else in America and yet STILL Hughes also stresses 2) how the Memphis, Nashville and Muscle Shoals musicians and labels managed to create amazing music that still matters and that still helped alter the world to boot. Hughes tells an uglier, more compromised and painful version of this history, but the closer-to-the-real truth results are more amazing, because more human, than the fantasy. I figure I’ll be checking back into Country Soul for a long time.

Country Soul is a book with a clear agenda exclusively focused on the premise that previous authors who have written extensively on southern soul - like Rob Bowman Soulsville, U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records, Peter Guralnick Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom and Barney Hoskyns Say it One Time for the Broken Hearted: Country Side of Southern Soul - have created and perpetuated a myth contrived by white musicians and studio owners about the positive impact of this musical genre on race relations in the 1960s and 1970s. It is unclear how well qualified Mr. Hughes is to have taken on this task given both the sensitivity of the subject matter in the second decade of the 21st century and the absence of any mention of many of the key players in country soul like Solomon Burke, O.C. Smith, James Carr, Brook Benton and Esther Philips. How can you take seriously a book on this topic that ignores James Carr ???In supporting his worldview, Mr, Hughes cites as unimpeachable evidence - i) the inability of Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams to break into the world of C & W (a brilliant and iconoclastic southern soul legend still active in 2014, whose country album "The Mercury Record" is a long way from his best work); ii) his clear disdain for the circumstances of Charley Pride's breakthrough as a country superstar; iii) Buddy Killen's apparent exploitation of Joe Tex (there are many sides to that particular story); and iv) instances of overt/insidious racism from the likes of Rick Hall, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, Duck Dunn and Steve Cropper. And to put the cherry on the cake he drags out the oft documented altercation between Ted White, Aretha Franklin's one time husband, and white session player, Ken Laxton that led to Ms. Franklin's Muscle Shoals session for her first recordings on Atlantic being aborted followed by the cessation of relations between Rick Hall and Jerry Wexler. While there is no doubt that racism was present in the music industry of the 60s as it was throughout society at that time, Mr Hughes comes across as the proverbial workman with a hammer who only recognizes a nail. Every encounter between whites and blacks in the context of the legendary soul studios Stax, Hi, FAME. AGP, MSS, etc., is interpreted by him as contributing to the main theme of his book, namely that ".......Southern musical spaces - both literal and figurative - have become a kind of ahistorical interracial dreamland. This is a fallacy. Nothing mattered more to these musicians than race. Nothing structured their work more than racial divisions and disparities... And African Americans did not share equally in the benefits....." (p.191). Thus every success story for a black artist associating with white musicians in Muscle Shoals, Memphis and Nashville is viewed as a denied opportunity to a cadre of unknown black musicians even though Isaac Hayes, Charles Hodges, Lester Snell, Marvell Thomas and Carson Whitsett all appear to have had gainful employment and varying degrees of fame after Booker T. and his B3 left Memphis for California.Mr Hughes' viewpoint is ultimately myopic, exceptionally dreary and negative, and dismissive of the wonderful music that came from these Southern soul studios.Another major shortcoming of this narrative is that Mr. Hughes provides minimal primary data but instead works almost exclusively from historical records both published and from museum archives with his only contributions being a meager 8 phone calls with relatively minor figures the most recent of which was 2011. Thus he takes many individuals at their word in an industry that is notorious for insincerity and avoiding conflict. One can only wonder why the important topic of this book failed to warrant fresh interviews with Rick Hall, Jim Stewart, Al Bell and Billy Sherrill although one can well imagine, given his negative perspective, that he would get the same cold shoulder that Gamble and Huff gave to John Jackson when writing his book on the Sound of Philadelphia A House on Fire: The Rise and Fall of Philadelphia Soul. And when a statement emerges that fails to support his premise - as when an African American praises a white - Mr. Hughes arrogantly dismisses and denigrates the events with epithets like "flowery" and "weepy". Why for instance is Charlie Rich's music any more "synthetic" than Millie Jackson's or Joe Tex's? And what happened to Stanley Booth's Rythm Oil: A Journey Through The Music Of The American South?Mr. Hughes attempts to shine light on an important topic yet singularly fails to appreciate throughout the book that the music business was not and is not a welfare program but rather depends on the meritocracy of its proponents and its products - what used to be vinyl 45s. Minor points of irritation - Hughes: i) lays claim to the rather obvious term "country-soul triangle" to describe the geographical relationship between Muscle Shoals, Memphis and Nashville p. 2 and then proceeds to use it and the title of Latimore's "There's a Red-Neck in the Soul Band" (Glades 1729) ad nauseam; ii) highlights Al Bell's deliberate use of the white Muscle Shoals musicians for many of the successful Staple Singers sides he produced in the 70s yet fails to adequately reconcile this with the Stax mantra at that time of Black Power and; iii) in describing a session with the Sweet Inspirations that had to be scrapped "over fears of racial violence" (p84) directs the reader (#12 p.217) to Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham's Moments From This Theatre) for a "recorded example' that does not exist on that CD. This book could also have done with tighter editing as Mr. Hughes is very sloppy in retelling the same story in different chapters. For those interested in Country Soul Barney Hoskyns Say it One Time for the Broken Hearted: Country Side of Southern Soul will suffice until the topic of racism in southern soul produces an author who can treat the subject with empathy and objectivity and has passion for this wonderful, timeless music.

A fantastic book and critical contribution to our understanding of music and race in America.

Good Nigh Boston by Adam Gamble was great considering I am from boston, awesome way to teach children about places in boston!! was a great book for my niece who is learning how to read. had a lot of fun pictures and was easy to understand. my niece liked the pictures and pretends to read the book when im not reading it to her which is very cute! all in all it was a good purchase and i would recommend it to anyone looking for a Spanish book for children. If you found my review helpful please hit "Yes" if not thank you for your time in reading my review.

I'd give zero stars if I could. These books are garbage. Everything is out of order. There's no order or reason to why they talk about what they talk about when they talk about it. They're always so corny and generic. Literally no thought has gone into these books. They don't even take the effort to make them rhyme.

I have one of these on my coffee table in my den. I always keep a couple of books for adults and a few for the kids too. This has gone over big time in my home and I thought I would order a second one as one of the many baby shower gifts for my friends new grandson-to-be. He'll be arriving here in the next month or so and this will be lovely in his nursery. I wasn't parting with the edition at my home as my copy gets read quite frequently. THIS BOOK IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The wording is great and the artwork is precious.

I have Good Night Maine and Good Night Lake, which I love reading to my 9 mo. old, but Good Night Boston isn't like those two. The illustrations are awful - very disappointing - like cheap Japanese animation. And it seems written by someone who doesn't actually know Boston - random things are capitalized, things that should be aren't, all tourist-y stuff, etc. Not sure why the people who make this series dropped the ball on this one - the others are very sentimental and cheerful and really make me think of Maine and the lake when I read them. Don't waste your money on this one.

great book for children l. durable great if they have visited to make a connection

sucks simplistically written, good morning this place, good night that place, no rhythm or rhyme, generic drawings

I love itWanted it as agift, they loved it

Love this version of the book!

This was my first introduction to the amazing world of tomorrow by Mark Goodwin. He can take you on a trip into next week, or next year, but no matter how far into the future this seems, it's possible. His way of weaving his characters personalities is wonderful. They grow and learn right in front of you. I laughed and cried and wanted to jump into the story and hurt a few of them.Be prepared to get lost in the story, look up and wonder where the last 3 hours went. I have the audio and the kindle version of his books and enjoy all versions. One thing I truly appreciate about this author is his ability to tell a fast paced story without the gratuitous violence for violence sake, clean language, and traditional values. The Economic Collapse Chronicles Three-Book Box Set: A Post-Apocalyptic Novel of America's Coming Financial Downfall

I read this a while back and became hooked on Mr. Goodwin's books and look forward to every new book he creates. I went ahead and reordered this in kindle edition since I must have passed on the paper back series to our private community library. We live in a "wooded community" similar to a gated community with only one gate though. I share these books here hoping that it is sparking some thought as to what is going on in our very broken world. I think the fact that Mark has to put a "decency disclaimer" on this book series pretty much says it all.

I don't think Mark Godwin can write a bad story. His words are so visual. I wasn't much of a reader, but my mom turned me onto "The Days of Noah" and I couldn't put the books down. I purchased my first gun, from reading this book. The one the FBI agent, Mr. Smith recommended. I then read, "The Days of Elijah" and when they meet Moses, I was just as excited and in awe as the characters in the book. "Seven Cows Ugly and Gaunt," was truly an eye opener of what the US could become if we don't bring God back into our lives. My husband thinks I'm crazy because I'm becoming a "Prepper!" There were times when I would have to remind myself that what was happening in the book, was not really happening in the world! Now I'm reading, "The Economic Collapse Chronicles" and they are just as exciting. I think if I had to do over, I would read the Chronicles first, Seven Cows Ugly and Gaunt, The days of Noah, and then the Days of Elijah last. Trust me when I say, YOU CAN NOT PUT THESE STORIES DOWN. They are fictional characters but the history of America and where it is going, as well as the Bible and God's promises to Believers and non believers is FACTUAL. The Days of Elijah takes you chapter by chapter of the Book of Revelations as well.

Love Mark's books!!! All of them have great action, realistic characters, and practical application!!! His topics are always relevant and could have been ripped from today's headlines... He weaves great advice for emergency preparedness into the books without sounding like a commercial... His characters are believable and not "super heroes"... Mark also does a GREAT job representing the difficulty of living out the Christian life and the supreme importance of eternal decisions... Highly recommend ALL of Mark's books- my favorite author in this genre!!!

I purchased all the books as singles and I can not tell you how happy I am that these are now a group. It's so much easier to read them all in a row without needing to find them of my "stuffed to the gills" kindle.I enjoyed these characters the first time, I'm sure I'll enjoy them together even more.

I read The Economic Collapse books individually but jumped at the chance to get the box set too. This series was just as exciting and educational the second time around! The characters are regular people thrust into a life where survival is a roll of the dice each hour of the day, and the plot keeps you hungry to know what's around the next corner. Peppered throughout this series are great survival tips and quotes from our founding fathers, that strike to the very heart of our nation's current problems. This series should be required reading for all of our leaders. A lot of thought went into each of these book and the series is just plain awesome!

This is a well done book series that presents an all to possible scenario for our country. It is well researched and well written. The perspective of both personal and political repercussions are especially effective. This series belongs up there with "One Second After" and subsequent books by Forstchen and the 299 Days series by Glen Tate in presenting a realistic view of our possible futures. It's nice having these all in one package for easy reading. The Audible versions narrated by Kevin Pierce are also excellent.

Great series... It really sucks you into the story, at times I was thinking that the events had actually taken place and honestly they are terrifying. The author did a great job researching out the cause and effects of an economic collapse. It aligns perfectly with what history has taught us and what we witness everyday on the news with little hiccups in society. I’ve recommended this series to family and friends, and they all say the same thing. It’s like your reading the events from a newspaper, and that they’ve really happened.

Waiting for the Barbarians is not simply an indictment of imperialism, and it’s not a political book. It’s time and setting are indeterminate and the major characters are not named. In this generic setting we are given character studies, or even a morality play. The author, J. M. Coetzee, shows us how people, not unlike ourselves, cope with the good, boring, bad, and evil in an imperial outpost. And in his showing us the lives and problems of his characters in this harsh place, he avers what is delusional, what is real, and what is just unknown. The story is told by the aging civil magistrate of an unnamed imperial outpost of an unnamed empire. The magistrate copes with life by following distractions of womanizing, excavating the nearby ruins, and by deciphering the writings he finds in those ruins. When a detachment of the imperial army brings barbarian prisoners into town, the magistrate is attracted to a young woman among the captives. She is near-blind and crippled from the tortures she has suffered at the hands of an army officer, Colonel Joll. The magistrate’s obsession with the woman echoes his obsession with understanding the barbarians, the empire, his own desires, why people behave as they do, and basically everything. As he works out his relationship with the woman, it is easy to identify with his introspection and boundless curiosity. His inquisitiveness wins out even over attentiveness to his job, and he comes to pay a stiff price for it.There’s a picture here that resonates. Empires demand total allegiance and are harsh with those that give less. The magistrate lapses in his duties like many of us lapse on our jobs. Our cost is economic hardship—the threat of starvation, actually—only a degree or two away from the magistrate’s punishment.Metaphors like that make this a quote-worthy book. There’s also the magistrate’s introspections. The story is told completely from his viewpoint and we get his observations almost as if he were journaling. It’s well-done, however, and does not intefere with following the story. His insights often arise from emotional reactions to what he’s relating, such as when he feels some regret for not “lightening up” when he observes some playful good humor among his soldiers:"Truly, the world ought to belong to the singers and dancers! Futile bitterness, idle melancholy, empty regrets!"Or when he realizes he is not immune from the empire’s evil:"Why should it be inconceivable that the behemoth that trampled them will trample me too? I truly believe I am not afraid of death. What I shrink from, I believe, is the shame of dying as stupid and befuddled as I am."We see his fear of ignorance here, though it’s more often expressed as his burning desire to understand everything.Another big theme is the ever-present possibility for a person’s status to change, usually for the worse. It happens to several characters and we observe how they cope. It speaks to how we deny the possibility for calamity:"No one truly believes, despite the hysteria in the streets, that the world of tranquil certainties we were born into is about to be extinguished."Their fear of a coming attack by the “barbarians” motivates most conversations among the outpost’s population. It becomes the baseline of their existence. Even so, they go about their lives as before, though with their numbers reduced by desertion.Waiting for the Barbarians is not an action story, though it does involve soldiers in a fort, antagonisms, and struggles. Most of the story movement is character driven but it held my interest. The characters were interesting and identifiable. The themes were universal and accessible, leaving a haunting finish. The book was first published in 1980. Threads in it, however, strike me as being very relevant to this present time, especially in the US where the machinations of empire have become prominent. There is an anticipation of disaster in the air that mirrors waiting for barbarians (indeed, we are bombarded with “news” and commentary about the barbarian horde said to be murderously envious of our “freedoms”). The magistrate’s warning about the fragility of our tranquil certainties rings true, and the sound is a funeral bell’s hollow peal.

Took me a while to work my way through, but overall a very interesting account of a year in the life of a magistrate posted at the frontier of the Empire. He narrates the whole book, so not much dialogue (which is the reason it took me quite a while to finish this), but what dialogue there is is significant and telling of the characters you encounter through this man's eyes. Definitely not the style of writing I enjoy (as this was read for class), but a good book in its own right. The story still manages to feel like it does move, with vivid details weaved throughout, making you feel more a part of the setting, but it's a very passive voice throughout and not much excitement takes place. Again, I come back to this same word to describe this book: interesting.

The first person narrator is an old magistrate of a colony whose life changes after picking up a lantern one day to see what was going on and through subsequent incidents and circumstances, he becomes the examining/questioning voice over the human depravity as well as self examination. "But as for me, sustained by the toil of others, lacking civilized vices with which to fill my leisure, I pamper my melancholy and try to find in the vacuousness of the desert a special historical poignancy." to "..there was no way, once I had picked up the lantern, for me to put it down again. the knot loops in upon itself; I cannot find the end." Through motifs of lantern, sun glasses and blindness, and the dream sequences, the author wakes up the awareness of human conscience, depravity, frailties, hypocrisies, and the horror of pointless and inconsequential pursuit, "the image of a face masked by two black glassy insect eyes from which there comes no reciprocal gaze but only my doubled image cast back at me" The protagonist is a rather antihero type, a real human, complex and ambivalent with conscience, lust, fear and doubts, often faltering and needy, but genuinely interested in knowledge and his mind and his (sub)consciousness active all the time. He is transformed beyond his "great indifference to annihilation"
