Review
"Havel and Sanchez have written a magisterial volume on international aviation law, one that belongs on the desk of every scholar and practitioner in the field. Filling a decades-old gap in the legal literature, they have rendered the aviation community an enormous service with a balanced and nuanced treatment of the full panoply of air law, including the most contentious issues." John Byerly, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Transportation Affairs"The Principles and Practice of International Aviation Law is to be greatly welcomed as a forward-looking update to existing aviation law publications. Reminiscent of the "Chicago School" of economics, authors Havel and Sanchez represent a "Chicago School" of aviation law that is leaving its own distinct footprint on the global aviation community. The book employs a broadly contextualized and innovative approach to complete a topical picture of international aviation law in an interesting and practical manner as rightly suggested by the title." Pablo Mendes de Leon, Universiteit Leiden"This is a long-needed contemporary overview of the dynamic and distinctive world of international aviation law. It is comprehensive in its subject coverage, sophisticated in its analysis and use of interdisciplinary concepts, and puts the past, present and speculations about the future in context. Anyone interested in the subject should want a copy." Michael E. Levine, Distinguished Research Scholar and Senior Lecturer, New York University School of Law"This is an outstanding contribution to understanding the philosophy and key principles of the regulatory framework of international aviation. The book examines in detail the various instruments governing international aviation ... It intelligently addresses the paradox of why one of the most global sectors in the world, i.e. aviation, is regulated by a panoply of legal instruments, often fragmented and disparate, entailing a high degree of complexity. ... The expertise and profound insight of Professors Havel and Sanchez has allowed them to address this challenging task in a comprehensive and thorough way. The book combines a very clear legal analysis of the relevant instruments together with thoughtful insight on the practice and relevant doctrines in this area. ... an indispensable tool for scholars, practitioners, students and anyone trying to understand the complexities behind the rules governing one of the most exciting economic sectors in the world." Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director-General of the Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General, European Commission

Book Description
This book provides an introduction to, and demystification of, the private and public dimensions of international aviation law. The air transport industry is not governed by a discrete area of the law but rather by a series of disparate transnational regulatory instruments. By combining classical doctrinal analysis with insights from newer disciplines such as international relations and economics, the book maps international aviation law's complex terrain for new and veteran observers alike.

Unless you are a lawyer, stay away from this book. I am a pilot and this book was required for a Global Aviation Regulations class I took as part of my BS degree in Aviation Management. This is the first time this book has been used in the course as they recently changed it from domestic regulations to include global as well. Previously, they used Practical Aviation Law by J. Scott Hamilton as the required textbook. I was excited for this as I enjoy interpreting regs in a practical manner. This book in review, however, is far from practical. As a matter of fact, most of us, including the professor himself agreed that it was downright brutal to read. I might have read a handful of pages from various sections and I dreaded opening it again. I could read 5 pages and have no idea afterwards what I just read, other than a bunch of fancy sounding jibberish, in which I retained none of. The professor admitted he judged it by the title and figured it would be proper for a course on global aviation regulations and law. It never really got used and now I'm going to attempt to resell it and recoup a little bit of money.Like I said previously, I don't know if this book was written solely for folks in the legal field, but if you're a pilot interested in aviation regulations, execute a Chandelle immediately.
I could not disagree more with the prior review panning this book. I could not put it down! But then again, I am a lawyer and was looking for an introduction to the field of aviation law. I found this chock full of historical and current information, well-presented and engaging for the reader. References to underlying source material was very welcome and complete. I'd highly recommend this to others looking for a detailed overview of the subject matter.
Written for lawyers rather than students, IMO. I'm an IP lawyer and ex-GC for a small international airline.
