This is not an academic book, and I mean that in the best way possible. Many UX books drone on with hundreds of pages of theory and advanced methods, and those definitely have their value if you're looking for very deep knowledge of this field. Where this book excels is in giving you the tools to make immediate improvements. Have an ugly design problem you're trying to tackle and need a solid, grounded process to take it on? This is your book. Need to get developers or managers on board with UX and participating in the process? This is your book. Trying to explain what you do to your parents? This is your book.The author's premise is that "user interface design isn't a subjective visual art about pixels and aesthetics but rather a principled objective communication skill to explain tasks to users". So while he does touch on mental models, interaction patterns, and visual design, it always ties back to communication. If this were a conversation, what would we say to the user? How would we say it? When would we say it? It seems obvious but is a surprisingly useful metaphor and he provides many examples of how to put it into action. Each chapter concludes with a page of exercises to expand your thinking and put the material into action – I wish my university had used this as a textbook.The final chapter presents a couple design challenges with thorough solutions, working through the entire design process and showing each of the activities and deliverables. I've been hauling the book around in my backpack for the past few weeks so that I can apply that thinking to my own projects. That's about the highest compliment I could pay a book – there aren't any others that I've kept with me at all times and referenced so regularly.
The book is well written with more than just theory. Mr. Mckay gives you a concept, examples and practical practice questions at the end of each chapter. It is easy to read, I especially like the BOLD text throughout the book that highlights the most important aspects of the section for those that speed read something the first time around.I gave a presentation to my development team, using some of the content from the book, and it was well received. I then recommended it to all the software engineers and the book has been one of the most sought out books in the department. I now tell the team to buy their own copy because I find myself needed to refer back to it often.
Everett has matter of fact way cutting to the heart of the matter in this book. I didn't make it out of the intro before I had my first aha moment, one simple question that has given me a new way to evaluate the quality of an UI element. The aha moments kept on coming. I've been doing this for a long time but am amazed at how many little things I've already begin to change about my process thanks to this book.Everett offers a great set of 10 principles that on their own made the book worthwhile. His examples and explanations break the complexities of UI design into simple to understand concepts that are easy to apply immediately.As a long time advocate of incorporating emotional outcomes in UX design, I was pleased to see an entire chapter dedicated bringing emotions to UI design.The book is easy to scan if you're the type that doesn't read cover to cover. He does a nice job calling out key concepts so you browse for specific topics of interest that you can then deep dive into for more details. There's a lot of content but it's quick and easy to consume.I would recommend this to anyone that would like to end the debates about UI decisions, and wants to design UI's that people can not only use but also make them feel good using it.
This is an exceptional book on UI design. Well presented. Each chapter feels like a revelation that gives you frameworks and structures to tame the chaotic experience of attempting to create software that users like and understand. If it were easy, or intuitive to make intuitive UI, almost all software would not be so lame to use. On the other hand....Everett is training us to differentiate ourselves by making communicative UI. Why not be the ones to make the good stuff?
Insightful book. Some of the terminology is more confusing that it needs to be. Even though I have more than 10 years experience in UI design I had to keep rereading some of the definitions to understand what was being explained. Its a good book to share to clients who want to undertake an application development project.
This book is aimed at business professionals who aren't familiar with the importance of UI/UX as a discipline, and are ready to take the next step in understanding how interfaces shape how we interact with software systems. McKay gets detailed to the point of breaking down the visual "grammar" of visual interfaces into each of its constituent parts (input boxes, radio buttons, headings, error text, etc), and describing the most standard and proper use of each one. This would be an asset to anyone in user experience, user interface, or the levels of management above those teams.
Well written and thoughtful discussion of UI design.
This book provided great insight into the primary purpose of a UI. I was always trying to fully understand the art of UI and this book brought it all home to me.
