This is a must-have for genealogists who are interested in the life of Captain John Johnson of Roxbury. I am an 11th-generation direct descendant of John Johnson, so I have a particularly keen interest in his life. My major source for many years was Maro Johnson's Ancestry of Maro Johnson and of his sister Eliza Love Johnson : Descendants of Captain John Johnson and his wife, Margery (Roxbury, Mass. 1630). (The author, Maro Johnson, is my great-grandfather's uncle's grandson.) There is a lot of good information in Maro's book, but also some confusion about Captain John Johnson's wives and children. Gerald Garth Johnson's book, bolstered by both Internet research and in-person research in England, clears up the confusion about John Johnson's family. He also examines hypotheses about John Johnson's parents, and rightfully concludes that it is still an open question.What I appreciated most about the book is the portrait Gerald Garth Johnson was able to paint about what life was probably like for John Johnson in England and in New England. The portrait of life in England is somewhat speculative, but well-reasoned. The portrait of life in the Roxbury colony is superbly documented, and gives the reader a real feel for that period of history.

From what I've seen this is the most up to date book on Capt John and for anyone interested in detail on one of our founders, quite useful

I bought this for a friend and he loved it. It was about his great time 4 grandfather.

I am writing a history of my grandmother's family and had traced her line back to Captain John Johnson. This book enabled me to verify information I had found from other sources and it also included very interesting historical context for the man and his times. If you are related to this family, this book is an essential resource.

Yup it was very good. It isn't a genealogy but about the first of the Johnson clan in the Americas. Very interesting read. I think I am getting two more for xmas presents
